Y.M.C.A.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEET. The monthly meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors was held in the association’s building on Thursday evening, when there were present Messrs T. R. Hodder (chairman of directors), C. Ifl. Histed, E. D. Wycherley, G. I. AlcGregor, G. G. Wilson, F. Needham, G. H. Trott, H. J. Harris, J. 11, Cunninghamc. AY., B. Tennent, J. O. Young, E. L. Eoddy, ,T. H. Dick and the general secretary (Mr Allan Gardiner) . Reports were received from the various committees and dealt with as follow ;- <• Physical committee. Air J. H. Dick, chairman.—We are sending a basket-ball team to play Wellington .Y.M.C.A. on Tuesday, 21st inst. The table below shows the attendances to the first week in July, with a comparison of last year’s figures for the same period :

AA’ith the exception of the business men, seniors and ladies, all of the above classes started late owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic. Except for business men and seniors (two classes per week), all the classes arc one per week.—Adopted. Social committee. Mr E. D. Wycherley, chairman.—After referring to the visit to Wanganui last week-end, the report continued: —At the last meeting the committee thoroughly discussed the problems in connection with the running of the fortnightly socials, and the following recommendation was made: “That the social committee add to its numbers up to six lady members for the 'specific purpose of assisting with the fortnightly socials in the lounge. 'Fhe next social on 25tli inst. is to be a special event, and all the members present at the last meeting agreed to be present and to get at least two items each. Owing to the unfortunate condition of the wireless aerial the committee feels that it is a matter which should be referred to the board. The work will apparently never be satisfactory until we pay to have it done properly. Messrs VYychcrlv and Eoddv undertook to represent the position to the board.—Adopted, the first clause being agreed to and the wireless matter referred to the committee for a report. Educational Committee, Air (1. I. McGregor chairman.—Public speaking class: Mr L. F. tie Berry, M.A., tutor of this class, presented a short report. Although he was not satisfied with the average attendance at the class, he expressed himself as very satisfied with the progress exhibited by those members who had considered his class worthy of regular attendance. The class is coming to a close in a week’s time, and the committee is desirous of carrying the matter a step lurther by instituting a study group from the present, class to study literature and other cultural subjects that directly follow on public speaking. If the members of the present class or oilier Y.M.C.A. members show sufficient enthusiasm "in the project, the committee' will arrange for a number of local gentlemen to direct the course of study. Salesmanship class: I duly conveyed to the committee the resolution passed at the last board meeting recommending that a salesmanship class should be commenced. The board evidently was not aware that the committee had previously given very careful consideration to the idea at the commencement of the Season. The same reasons that actuated the committee in deciding against the project then apply now, namely: (1) That there seems little if any demand from members or Ihe general public for such a class; (2) that the membership of the class instituted two years ago was only eight, and the class'could hardly be called an unqualified success; (If) that no competent tutor is available for such a class; (4) that from a financial point of view it is extn mely doubtful whether this class can be made sell-supporting. To these reasons may be added the iurtlier one that the present is hardly the time of the year for the institution of this class. ' However, the committee considered that due weight must be given to the opinions of the hom’d, ft has, therefore, circularised all business houses and firms in the vicinity of Palmerston North and the membership of the association asking them to hand to the general secretary the names of those desirous of affiliating with such a class. If sufficient support is forthcoming from those interested the committee will have much pleasure, in instituting a class in salesmanship.— Adopted. Boys’ Work Committee, Mr H. ,T.

Harris chairman. —Regarding the campaign commenced early this month with a view to increasing the membership in the boys’ division, to dale six new boys have enrolled and several others are already on the way. Wehave every reason to believe that a .successful campaign will eventuate. At the last meeting of the' committee a recommendation was made that prizes bo purchased not to exceed a total of £4, and to be 12 in all, one for each club; the prizes to be awarded under the following conditions: Every club must reach a minimum membership of 12 by the end of the campaign before any member is eligible for a prize. The boy in each club that qualifies as above, who gets the most new members for bis club to be the prize winner. The boys have displayed great interest and are doing their best to get the new members. There are now 12 clubs in the division, each with an adult leader as follows: Messrs Matthews, Merson, Harris, Nicholson, Robb, Griffiths, Williamson, T'wist and Gardiner, each with one chib, and Mr Harkness is leading three clubs. Progress is certainly being made in this division, and we fee! that if board members could take an interest in some of the meetings occasionally it would have a stimulating effect.— Adopted and the recommendation regarding prizes agreed to. Membership Committee, Mr H. Perrier chairman, —New members recommended for .election are- as follow: C. H. C. Hurst, W. G. Wilby, John O’Sullivan, I. T. J. Mac Gibbon, J. H Strange, C. IV. Dunciunb, H. Grinstead, V. A. Anderson. Including the above and since Ist March, 1925, a total qf 58 new members have been elected. In addition there arc 32 signed applications, which are not yet in order for this committee to deal with. Tito boys’ work committee is at present in the midst of a special campaign to increase the' membership in the boys’ division, and the committee desires to record its warm appreciation of the effort being made. Apart from the boys’ division the position is much more- satisfactory than in any previous year. If any hoard member can assist in sending along a few boys K -vtveen 12 ar.d 17 years of nge, the

membership committee will he- very grateful indeed, as the chances of reaching the objectives aimed at for this year are very much dependent upon a considerable, increase in the boys’ division membership.—Adopted. General Secretary. The ladies’ auxiliary recently improved the attractiveness of the lounge by providing six cushions, which they had made, also vases with artificial flowers, and l:y regilding the frames of the pictures. This has made the lounge a cosier “homey” room, and the members appreciate this latest act of thoughtfulness on the part of the auxiliary very much indeed. On 7th July I took a concert party of 10 performers to give an entertainment at the camp of the 6th Wellington Mounted Rifles at Feilding. The entertainment given was much appreciated and the point of contact was an excellent one for the Y.M.C.A., as there were 300 young men in camp from this and surrounding districts. Messrs J. G. Radford and W. H. Wilson kindly lent their cars to take us over, and they have been duly thanked.—Adopted, the ladies’ auxiliary to be thanked.

Accounts amounting to £37 Os lid were passed for payment. A committee, consisting of Messrs H. F. Harris, F. Needham, J. C. Young, W. B. Torment, E. D. Wycherley and J. R. Cunnipghamo was appointed to consider and report on the matter of providing hut accommodation on the boys’ camp site at Pohangina.
