WELFARE OF DAIRYING.

THE DOMINION CONFERENCE. DAIRY FARMERS’ UNION. The third animal Dominion conference of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Uniofi, which opened at Pnkekohe on Wednesday, was attended by 26 delegates, comprising ten from the Wellington district, four from Wairarapa, seven from Central Waikato and five from lower Waikato. The delegates were accorded a civic welcome by Mr R. F. Wilkinson, deputyMayor of Pnkekohe, and other speakers. PRESIDENT’S REMARKS. In acknowledging the welcome, the Dominion president, of the union, Mr Neil Campbell, said the union had 3000 members. It; aimed at speedier and shorter shipping arrangements, a. deputation to Parliament on the moratorium, the Government provison of money for settlers and opening of lands for .settlement. Regarding the land tax, it was the only body that had met the Government on these questions, and it had got rid of the tax on mortgages. The income tax on farms had gone altogether. It was assisting returned soldier settlers in their difficulties. It advocated laboratories for dairy science research. The pork industry could be brought up to £17,000,000 per annum, equal to butter-fat. The Bank of New Zealand had taken on the business. llad it not been for this the price would have been much less on the local market. Other planks in the union’s conference were the Dairy Control Board and a union paper. The necessity for organising was apparent, and they could not have achieved what they had without a. union. Farmers were the only people who had not got compulsory organisation. It was the union’s wish to work with the consumer and the producer. It was not out for exorbitant profits. “Whatever is the party in power, we will have a strong influence on matters affecting dairying,” concluded Mr Campbell.

CONFERENCE- DECISIONS. It being stated that overseas visitors had expressed the very definite opinion that there was a big export market in England and elsewhere awaiting" Now Zealand bacon and pork, it was resolved that the grading and marketing of pork for export be put on a better basis. A remit from the Buekland branch, “that this conference, seeing the rapid progress of the dairying industry, recommends that a Minister for Dairying be appointed,” was carried unanimously. A resolution was passed commending the Agricultural Department for the stringent measures it is taking for the prevention of contagious abortion in dairy cows. A lengthy discussion ensued, dealing with many aspects of the matter of herd testing, and after proposing several remits and amendments, which wore (intimately withdrawn, the following resolution was carried : “That this conference strongly supports the policy of the Now Zealand Herd .Testing Association in asking for one shilling subsidy per cow for all group herd testing associations, and urges the Minister of Agriculture to give earnest and immediate attention to requests by that body.” WHEAT QUOTATIONS.
