CUSTOMS CLEARING OFFICE
SUGGESTED FOR PALMERSTON
NORTH. The desirability of having Customs officers stationed at the local post office was stressed by Mr J. P. Stubbs when speaking at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. He quoted an instance where his firm had procured a special piece of urgently required machinery from overseas. This had arrived at the local post office and had had to be returned to Wellington for clearing by the Customs authorities. The chairman. Mr H. L. Young, pointed out that the assessing of dutiable goods required an army of experts. Mr A. Dawson: That is so.
The chairman continued that, owing to the fact that so many experts were required, a Customs clearing office had never been brought into being in Palmerston North.. The small amount of business that they would have to do here would hardly warrant an office being opened. After further brief discussion, the chairman and secretary, Mr AY. McKenzie, were instructed to look into the matter and report to the next meeting.
