BANK STATEMENTS

NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED. ' DEPOSITS AGAIN INCREASE. WELLINGTON, July 11. An excess of deposits over advances of £7,527,866 is shown by the aggregates of the average statements for the June quarter issued by the six banks trading in New Zealand. This is the most favourable mid-year position since the end of 1920. A year ago there was an excess of deposits of £3,743,725. The movements during the year have been as follow: — Free Deposits, increased £2,160,449 Fixed deposits, increased £1,673,874 Advances, increased £12,056 Discounts, increased £38,127 Note circulation, increased ... £250,729 Coin and bullion, decreased .. £147,230 Following is a comparison of the various classes of deposits for the June quarter of the last two years:— June, 1924. The increase in the free deposits or current account balances is equal to about 8 per cent. The advances totalled £42,421,049, as compared with £42,408,993 for the June quarter of last year, an increase of £12,056. The figures for the several banks are as follow:

Taking the fixed and free deposits together, and the advances and discounts together, the excess of the one over the other for the June quarter of recent years is as follows :

The note circulation for the past quarter totalled £6,893,848, an increase of £250,729. The coin and bullion held by the banks, though £147,230 less than was held in the corresponding quarter last year, was more than cover for the note circulation.
