ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

SATURDAY’S PLAY. The three senior sdceer fixtures were played at North Street Park on Saturday hi glorious weather, hut. on very muddy fields. The At.hlcticFoxton match was of a dual character —to decide senior competition honours and the right of one of the contestants to meet R.S.A. in tho Chatham Cup final. At full time honours were even —no score —and the teams thus fought a draw in the. competition. On ten minutes extra each time being played for the Chatham Cup consideration. Athletic scored three goals to their opponents’ nil. The matches resulted; CHATHAM CUP. Athletic 3 v. h’oxton nil. ITS.A. 2 v. Rangers nil. SENIOR COJIPETITION. St. Andrew's R 4 v. St. Andrew's A 3. Athletic nil v. Foxton nil. .TLiNIOR COMPETITION. Scouts 1 v. Technical 1. ... PRIMARY GAMES. West End 2 v. Central 1. Terrace End 1 v. Y.M.C.A. nil. ' ST. ANDREW’S A AND XI. The St. Andrew's A and R match did not atti-iiot much attention. The club intermixed the players, w ith the result that the It team secured its first win ot' the. season. Kennedy (2), Marshall and Burton scored for the winners, and Pcrigo, Park and Freeman for St. Andrew's A. ATHLETIC v. l-OXTON. The Athletic-Foxtou match wits a surprise to followers of tho code. All tho way Foxton harried Mnnawatu’s second team, and there was little to choose between the elevens. There was much close work about either goal, tho Foxton defender doing particularly well. Athletic opened with a series of assaults, which were effectively repelled, and Foxton more than held their own up to half time. The coastal men commenced the second spell in determined fashion, and for a considerable time caused the Athletic supporters anxiety. Towards the full time period both sides worked hard for a margin, but tile period of competition play ended without a goal being netted. The teams then changed ends to seek a Chatham Cup decision and, although well tired, commenced right away to hustle the leather about. Athletic appeared the stronger and, quickly gaining a scoring position, gave Hearsey tho chance to send home one of his usual hard shots. —Athletic 1, Foxton nil. The visitors made a magnificent endeavour to equalise, but simply broke up under the pressure. A minute or so later Wheeler shot for goah> and tho custodian falling in tho ' mud, the hall trickled in over his body.—Athletic 2—o. Early in tho second ten minutes, Ilearsey scored with ease, and A till otic thus won in peculiar fashion, a hard-fought, even struggle. R.S.A. v. RANGERS. As has been the ease, with the team in recent matches, Rangers put up a very solid defence against R.S.A., and it was only in the concluding stages that the lazier eleven gained tho ascendancy. For tho most part the interest of tho spectators was devoted to. this fixture. Both teams started in willing fashion, and throughout it was a strenuous struggle, of which R.S.A. had just a little—and a very little—tho better* Veterans in Wags tuff and Tantrum were powerful factors for Rangers in defence, though all tho team, and Crow in particular, worked very hal'd. In tho curly stages R.S.A. did most of the attacking, but before tho first spell was far advanced they i often liad all they could do to keep their «A>t free. R.S.A. had difficulty all the way

m getting within shooting distance, such was their opponents’ defence, but R.S.A.’s control ant) combination were sustained as usual, and carried them through. Morgan, Contaur, Stevens, Jones, Tucker and Baigent. were all conspicuous among tho striped jerseys. At half time there was no score, and on tho change over Rangers- had the angle of tho sun and a slight breeze in their favour. A minute, after the commencement of the spell,. Contaur found, the net for R.S-.A. Rangers retaliated, and kept their opponents busy defending for a considerable spell, Chapman effecting a good save by throwing himself full length on the ground towards the corner of the goal-mouth. From then on R.S.A. dominated the play, and following a close shot over the bar by Contaur, Baigent added tho final score of the match, which ended in favour of R.S.A. by 2 goals to nil. ENGLISHMEN WIN AGAIN. AUSTRA LI AN S OUTCLASSED. , . SYDNEY, July 12. Playing at the top of tlieir form the English Association eleven outclassed Australia in the third test, at Maitland, by eight goals to two. Ten thousand people were present. Batten was unable to go wrong, shooting with deadly unerring accuracy from whistle to whistle. He scored five goals, bringing his tally to 38 for the tour. Cartwright was constantly peppered by the visitors, some shots escaping his vision altogether. J ho local players, despite a dismal showmg on paper, performed creditably in the circumstances. They were simply out of their class. Hannaford placed a corner conceded by Storey, and Batten tipped it under the bar within a few minutes of the commencement. Simms added a goal and Batten immediately scored with a convincing shot which found Cartwright off his legs. Then Hannaford with p. cross-kick hit the Post, the hall rolling into the net.' The visitors, playing in great heart, 'hit out,” and Batten, collecting a long pass, electrified the crowd by banging into the net. Before the interval Leonard opened the scoring for Australia from a centre by MeNnughton. At half time the scores were s—l.5 —1. Play in the second term continued on similar lines. The final scores were B—2. Tho total receipts to date amount to 1117,000. —Press Assoeiat ion. CITY RESULTS. Otago.—Seacliff 5 v. KaitamraU 1: Northern 4 v. Old Boys 2.
