FIREMAN’S DEATH
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. SEQUEL TO COLLISION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. At the resumed inquest this morning on Station Officer .1. H. Nobktt, who was killed in a collision on June 8. between a fire engine and a motor ear, William Lowe, chief motor mechanic, said that, while t 1 lire engine was approaching tho corner of Oxford Terrace and Madras street, he saw the ear approaching. He considered that he had ample time to pass it. The engine was doing about 18 miles an hour while the car was going fairly fast. Noblett was standing on the running hoard holding on to a seal. Witness had no time to put on the brakes before the collision occurred. Witness said the engine had two headlights and a tail light. If any persons said they did not hear tho siren they must he deaf. Superintendent Warner said he would think from the engine’s appearance afterwards that it had struck a lorry. Other witnesses and spectators said they heard the siren sounding. The engine was going faster than the car.. Both were going at a great rate. The hearing of further evidence is proceeding.
