TERRIBLE SHAKE
FOLLOWED BY FIRE. SOUTH CALIFORNIAN DISASTER. FINE BUILDINGS DEMOLISHED. INHABITANTS TERROR-STRICKEN. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 30, 9.45 a.m. SAN FRANCISCO, June 29. A message from Los Angeles states that 65 are known to have been killed in a South Californian earthquake, centring on Santa Barbara. It is believed that at least 100 perished and that several hundreds were injured. Some of the finest buildings were demolished. The railway lines were disrupted and communications cut off. A fire has broken out and a dam burst, torrents of water flooding the city. The inhabitants are panicstricken. Aeroplanes from San Francisco and elsewhere and Red Cross trains are rushing to the relief.—A. and N.Z. cable.
MORE REASSURING REPORT. ONLY EIGHT DEATHS. Received June 30. 10.45 a.m. * SAN FRANCISCO, June 29. The correct earthquake figures are eight dead and 300 injured according to a report from Santa Barbara, when telephone communication was re-estab-lished. Tho earlier reports indicating a great loss of life was due to the tact that over 100 who were missing were not accounted for during the morning, when the confusion 1 was very great, making it practically impossible to chock the dead and injured.—A. and N.Z. cable.
BRICK BUILDINGS SUFFER. ALL IN TOWN DEMOLISHED. Received June 30, 11.15 a.m. SAN FRANCISCO, June 29. Santa Barbara reports that all the brick buildings in the (own were demolished by llie earthquake which swept the State. — A. and N.Z. cubic. The town of Santa Barbara is on the coast of Southern California, and has a population of about 12,(XX).
