EIGHT AGAINST T.B.
BABES VACCINATED; LONDON, June 17. Professor Calmette’s experiments in infected districts, says a Paris message, have proved that vaccination of newly-born babes against tuberculosis is highly satisfactory. None of the children vaccinated in the first two months of 1922 have sinoe died (of any illness connected ‘‘G REATEST IM PORTANCE.” YEARS OF EXPERIMENTING. SYDNEY, June 18. The Director-General of Health (Dr. Dick) stated this afternoon that Professor Calmette’s experiments in vaccination against tuberculosis were very well known in the medical world. For many years he had been gradually perfecting his vaccine—which was really tuberculin- —bv expediments with animals —mostly calves. Now, apparently, he had such confidence in his method that the had commenced the vaccination of infants, with excellent results. Dr. Dick pointed out- that in the congested areas of England and parts of the Continent, the discovery would be of the greatest importance, not alone for humans, but in helping to purify the dairy herds, which were heavily infected with tuberculosis. In some districts 50 per cent of the cattle were tubercular. The experiments with children had proved tjie efficacy of the vaccination in early periods. It would be interesting to ascertain, Dr. Dick said, whether the vaccination of infants would establish immunity from the T.B. scourge in later life.
