MEETING OF LOCAL BRANCH. A meeting of the YVellington-Taranaki-Hawkc’s Bay branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Society was held this week. Mr F. Bond presided, and also present were Messrs A. Ho referred to the increased interests being taken in the Milking Shorthorns and said the records under semi-oflicial test had practically shown them that the Milking Shorthorns could hold their own with any breed. Tho records of Melba XV. in New South Wales and the record of Matangi Quality IV., owned by Messrs Ranstead Bros., had done a great deal to bring the breed before the public, lie was pleased to see the practical encouragement given to members to test their cows by the council, who were ollering substantial prizes in" this direction, lie regretted the loss sustained by Messrs Ranstead Bros, in losing their champion cow after making such a fiup record, and moved that Messrs RansteacUßros. be congratulated on the records obtained, and also that tho sympathy of the branch be conveyed to them in the loss of such a valuable animal, the motion being carried. Reference was also made to the loss suffered by Mr G. N. Bell, who, whilst visiting England, had purchased some splendid cattle to bring back with him, but had since received word that they had to be destroyed owing to the outbreak of tho foot and mouth disease in England.

Mr Bond reported on tho deputation’s visit to the ltoynl Society la.sk year to urge the elimination of the age limit, in the schedule for royal classes and the* Royal Society had acceded to their wishes. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then held, ami resulted as follows :—Chairman, Mr 11. Bond, Rangiotu ; delegates to the council, Messrs R. V. Brown and YY’. G. Heller; local executive, Messrs J. It. Anderson, I). Buick, It. V. Brown, B. 11. Slack and J. Hearsey; secretary, Mr J. Hearsey. The finances showed a credit balance of £l9 6s 9d and 85 members on the branch 1011. It was resolved that as the amount allocated last year by the council for A. and I’. shows hud not been expended, owing to a number of shows being cancelled, the council be urged to increase the annual grant for tho coming year. Much discussion ensued on tho reported withdrawal of entries for A. ami P. Shows by tho department in charge of mental hospital farms and State experimental farms, and it was resolved that the council of tho association be recommended to urge that the prohibition of these entries be withdrawn.

Before closing the mooting, the chairman urged the holding of branch meetings more often, as it brought the members together, and iie thought much good would result if rneeetings were held nt least quarterly. Tho members endorsed this view and it was adopted.
