POULTRY CLUBS

ANNUAL MEETING. RHODE ISLAND FANCY. The annual meeting of tho New Zealand Rhode Island Fowl Club was held at the Showgrounds yesterday, Mr J. Cunninghaine presiding. The annual report stated that there was very little to report concerning the work of the club; they had lost a very good friend and secretary in the death of Mr J. Jarvis, and his place would be hard to till. His keen interest in the welfare of the members was a great help to the munv specialist clubs he was secretary to. The 1924 show was a good one as regarded quality, the Red section being greatly admired by poultry breeders. It was regretted that the membership had not grown much this last year; how to increase it was a hard problem to solve. Possibly, if every member set to work he could obtain one or more members. Mr S. Milligan won the male shield outright, and Mr A. C. Yclland the utility shield. Both breeders had donated rosebowls to the value of £7, one in funcy and one in utility, the donors not to compete for the rosebowls. This should encourage breeders to show their birds and try to win these specials. . It was decided to leave matters in the hands of Mr G. 11. Ambler, of Auckland, until a further meeting can be called. WYANDOTTE CLUB. A meeting of the New Zealand Wyandotte Club was hold yesterday, but was merely of an informal character. It was decided to endeavour to carry on the affairs of the organisation, Mr C. P. Robert being elected president and secretary. It was decided to conduct the shows of the club at Palmerston North next year, when the annual meeting proper will take place. General regret was expressed at the death of Mr Jarvis, who had been an enthusiastic worker in the interests of this and a great many other poultry organisations. LEGHORN CLUB. Mr J. Cunninghame presided over the annual meeting of the New Zealand Leghorn Club. The annual report stated that there was much to cause disappointment at the club’s show at Levin, not by any means on account of tho local society’s endeavours, but to a large extent because members did not support it with their entries, the total number of which was the lowest that had been received as a club show since its inception. The principal reason that guided the council in selecting Levin was to help this young society in its endeavours to promote a successful exhibition of feather friends. Even the North Island Poultry Association’s two utility whit* championships failed to attract the usual amount of attention from members and utility Leghorn breeders. The quality of the English Whi! , Brown and American Leghorns, although few in number, was highly spoken of, and the utility ones as being on an average as seen at most recent exhibitions. The exhibits in English while and Brown Leghorns were only onethird us numerous as at Palmerston North in 1923, while the number of entries in the American and utility classes were only one-half the quantity in each case. The shield for American Whites was awarded to H. E. Cudby, Waitara, the utility shield to T. Bruce, Palmerston North, and the Collinson and Cunninghame silver teapot to G. 11. Ambler, of Ellerslie, for tho second time. The following officers’ were elected : President, Mr J. Cunninghame; vice-presi-dents, Messrs G. H. Ambler, W. Scott, A. IJ.1 J . Lister, J. Nixon, G. Grey and Rev. W. F. Stent; council, Messrs R. D. Whyte, W. Grey, A, E. Chatfield and E. : Evans; treasurer,' Mr T. Bruce. It was decided that the rule in connection with the eligilibity of unfinancial members be put into operation. THE ORPINGTON BREED. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Orpington Club was presided over by Mr W. Scott. The annual report stated that when the council decided that the 1924 show should be held at Palmerston North, hopes were expressed that there would be a revival of the interest lieing taken in the club’s welfare, but tho result was not largely realised. There was an addition of some six members, but one resigned and another failed to renew his subscription. There was, however, an increase of 30 entries in the utility classes, the majority of which were not very highly spoken of by the judge; he being closely connected with the Utility Poultry Club’s egg-laying competition at Papanui, would expect to see the exhibits conform more to the Orpington utility poultry standard. Why the club did not make more progress it was hard to say. When one considered the numbers of those who kept the Orpington fowl it should be easily the second largest specialist club, but unfortunately such was not the case. Numbers joined the club, but- in some years more failed to renew their subscriptions or resigned than those who sought admission. This occurred more in the No. 2 utility division than in the No 1. The awards on the whole were fairly well distributed and gave more or less the usual amount of satisfaction. The shield for the open or No. 1 division was awarded to W. T. Hicks (Otane, II.B.). and the No. 2 utility shield to T. Bruce (Palmerston North).

The report and also tho balance-sheet, showing a credit of £9 2s. were adopted. The following officers were elected : President. Mr IT. E. Rynian: \ice presidents, Messrs 15. A. Frazer and Ij. Vickers; council. Messrs ('. F. Purton, G. Conway. I). O. Pinker and R. D. Whyte; treasurer, Mr T. Bruce. The secretary deplored the lack of support afforded the club, and suggested that members he again written to asking that subscriptions ho sent in promptly. This was agreed to, a motion to that effect being passed. A vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr .T. Jarvis, the members standing as a mark of respect to the deceased gentleman's memory.
