NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,--With reference to the discussion at the council meeting on the 15th inst. re garding Palmerston North’s contribute ag to the Manawatu exhibit, it is quite evident that Mr Eliott is not acquaints with the objects of the provincial court, otherwise he would have supported the Mayor to the fullest extent. It may bo as well that these facts lie made clear. The provincial oourt :s for the purpose of showing the potent alities of the district—its scenic, primal y and secondary industries, and its possibilities of development. If there happen to he manufacturers in the district s i much the better for that district, but they pay for space at the same late as local bodies do. With regard lo secondary industries, there is a special court for this exhibit, which is the largest court in the exhibition. There are several manufacturers taking space in both the secondary industries court and tho provincial court, and they have to be encouraged as they are going to a great deal of expense by supply ng an exhibit and purchasing space in the provincial court. They have ;ndeed to be highly commended for th< interest they are taking in their distric >. The fact that the Government has passed a special Act so that local bodies can rcte themselves for the exhibition is sull cient proof that the provincial court is not purely a manufacturers’ exhibi., but one to advertise districts as a whole, and there never was a greater opportunity. The fact remains that if the local bodies in Manawatu do no; contribute, there will be no Manawatu display in the provincial court. As this is tho greatest national effort New Zealand has ever had, and probal ly will have for at least a genera-, tion, mrely Mr Eliott has sufficient vision to give his support now and make one of the committee to wait on the olher local bodies in tho district, so thi.t the wonderful district of Manawatu will not be eliminated, with its gn at resources for primary productions, not forgetting its flax industry, which would bo well advertised by means of tho provincial court. It if up to Palmerston North to take the lead and show an examplo to other local bodies surrounding. Mr Eliott will now, no doubt, co-operatc with the Mayor, as the time now available is very limited, and unless concrete results are forthcoming by the end ol June, space cannot be reserved after that elate. Tho Wellington executive went to Palmerston North, under their own expense, to try and help the Manawatu to organise themselves so that the Wellingto 1 provincial court would be a credit to the province, the Manawatu being the heart of the ’Wellington province.—l am, etc., T T M. B. MACDONALD. Dominion Farmers’ Institute, Wellington, 17th June, 1925.
