THE SAILORS’ PAY.

TAKING GOLD TO AUSTRALIA. Received June 19, 8.50 a.in. HONOLULU, June 17. The naval transport Chaumont arrived to-day with 2,000,000 dollars’ worth of gold bullion. A Congressional party was welcomed by Admiral Coontz and the bullion was met by an armed guard of 1000 sailors, while the local ladies adorned the Congressional party with flower garlands, after tho traditional Hawaiian fashion. The gold was carefully removed to two battleships and upon the arrival of the fleet in Australia, the bullion will be deposited at local banks and drawn against in sterling to pay the men and purchase supplies. The Congressmen will inspect the fleet and Pearl harbour. It has been hoped that they might continue with the fleet to Australia, but the impending session of Congress, which, it is believed, will consider the question of extending and strengthening harbour defences, makes their presence necessary in Washington long before the fleet returns from Australia. The Congressmen, will, however, proceed this week to Manila, returning thence to the United States.—A. and N.Z. cable.
