DEATH OF MRS M. A. SHORT.

The death of Mrs Mary Ann Short, who passed away at Reikiorangi on Tuesday, marks the passing of another of the Dominion’s centenanuns. Born in Buekington, Kent, England, on December 17, 1824, she came to .New Zealand in the ship Lady Nugent which, owing to the hostility of the Maoris at tho Hutt, perforce landed its passengers on the beach, or Dambton. Quay as it is known to-day. Cheerfully did she and her first, husband, Mr Clifton, endure the trials of the early days and along with many more farmer settlers blazed a trail through the forest primeval. Until 23 years ago Mrs Short lived at Brooklyn. Her second marriage was with Air Reuben Short, who cams to New Zealand from England in 1842, and who died tlireo years ago at the age of 94 years. Mr and Airs Short took up their residence in Pulrnerston North and resided here for 23 years. Following on Mr Short’s death tho deceased laxly went to live with her son, Air S. Clifton, at Reikiorangi. There were six ohildren of tho marriage—two sons and four daughters—those living being: Air S. Clifton (Reikiorangi) and Mesdames G. Key (Wellington); U. C. Rasmussen (Brooklyn) and J. Tremain (Palmerston North). There are 37 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Nearly a centenarian is Mrs Snort’s brother, Mr H. Southey, of Feilding. He is 94.
