DRUNKEN BUS DRIVER.

SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT Per Prese Association AUCKLAND, May 20. A well-known bus proprietor of Auckland, J. Trewheela, appeared on summons at the police court this morning when he was charged with being in charge of a motor bus on Grafton bridge, while in a state of intoxication. Mr J. J. Sullivan, who appeared for Trewheela, in pleading guilty, said that no damage was done either to the bus or to pedestrians. Defendant was a well-known man who owned three large sight-seeing buses. Counsel said that recently it Jiad been the practico of the court to inflict tines on motorists who were charged with being in a state of intoxication. Trewheela was not very intoxicated and was not arrested by the police. In view of the facts of the case and the recent practico of the court in such cases it was pleaded that if defendant were sent to prison it would practically ruin his business. Would the Magistrate inflict a fine in this case? Mr J. W. Poynton: “I have given warning times out of number that penalties in such cases would have to be increased. A motor bus is far more dangerous than an ordinary motor ear as it carries more passengers, in this case I cannot impose a fine. Defendant will be sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
