LEVEL CROSSING DANGER

SIGNAL DEMONSTRATED. A demonstration of a device known as die Pearson railway crossing signal was given in the Square last night before a large number of interested speitators. The device consists of a pair of oar-shaped arms mounted on a pos; some ten feet high, the general appearance being similar t-o the usual railway crossing notice. At the end of each arm is a red light visible from the back as well as the front. Mounted on the supporting post is a large gong. The operation is as follows: On the approach of a train, electrical contracts (situated some six hundred yards from the signal) set in operation' an electric motor which causes the arms to revolve, at the same time lighting the red lamps and ringing the gong. When tho train reaches the signal tho arms return to normal. A 3 demonstrated last night the device certainly appears effective and should minimise level crossing accidents us it at once attracts attention. The gong cannot fail to ring as the arms strike it at each revolution, while tho lights catch the eye at once. Explaining the machine to tho gatl ering present, Mr Pearson stated that lie had interviewed tho Minister of Railways and his officers some

months ugo ami they had passed favourable comments on it. Permission was granted to erect one at Wanganui and this had been done, the signal now having been in good running order for some little time.
