WASTING MONEY.

SIR ROBERT STOUT’S PROTEST. A UNIVERSITY INCIDENT. CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. At the University Senate to-dav, when proposals for the appointment of extra moderators for the passing of papers for the accountants’ examination were considered, Sir Robert Stout strenuously protested against piling up expenditure. The Senate was heaping up wrath againyt the day of wrath. The country could not afford the huge expenditure upon education. The moderators were unnecessary.

Mr De La Mare agreed with the main contention of Sir Robert Stout that moderators were unnecessary, hut in view of the fact that the country could spend so much on beer and horse racing it could afford to foot the bill on education.

Sir Robert Stout: Because we waste money on horse-racing there is. no reason why we should waste it on education.

Mr J. Canghley, Director of Education, suggested that the examined should be asked to certify that they bad personally worked out the papers and that they could be done in the time allowed. This would obviate the necessity of more moderators. The proposal was adopted.
