COUNCIL SUGGESTS AMENDMENT TO ACT. NO SHOPS IN RESIDENTIAL AREA. Some finality in the matter of the debatable question of the erection of shops in residential areas was reached at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday night when, acting on the council’s instructions the municipal solicitor forwarded a suggested amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920. The suggested amendment, which it was thought would empower the council in the direction desired, was as follows: “Defining any specific portions of the borough as residential areas, and prohibiting or regulating the erection in any such defined area of buildings not intended solely for residential purposes.” “Prohibiting or regulating the establishment in any such defined area of any trade, manufacture, or industry, or of any wholesale or retail business and regulntirig the future carrying on of any such trade, manufacture, industry, or business permitted by the council to be so established.” The amendment, the solicitor pointed out, would not affect existing shops. “That is the idea of the council,” said the Mayor, in accepting the proposed amendment for forwarding to the proper quarter.
