HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North High Schools Board of Governors and Technical School Committee w r as held last night, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., presiding. There were also present: Mrs M. Aitchison and Messrs M. H. Oram, \V. V. Durward, AV. 11. Birnie, 0. Monrad, T. R. Hddder, W. T. Penny and J. W. Rutherfurd. In extending a welcome to Mrs Aitchison, who was recently appointed by the Minister of Education to fill the vacancy caused by tho death of Mr S. R. Lancaster, the chairman stated that he was certain that, with her experience on other bodies, she would prove a valuable member of the board. Mrs Aitchison briefly replied. The chairman also expressed pleasure that Messrs Hodder and Oram had been re-appointed as representatives of the Wanganui Education Board and 1 Palmerston North Borough Council. REPORTS. The rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray, M.A.) reported that the roll number was 809 and that the average attendance for the month had been 303. The school was closed on May 11 and 14 on account of the death of the late Prime Minister. The work had been proceeding satisfactorily, and there was nothing special to report other than that the season’s inter-school football fixtures hadbeen arranged as follow: —June 17,15 t XV. v. Wairarapa High School; 2nd XV. v. Dannevirke High School; Juile 20, Ist XV. v. Wanganui Technical College: 2nd XV. v. Redding Technical High School; August 5, Ist XV v. Wanganui Collegiate School; July 29, Ist XV. v. Napier High School (at Napier). All the matches with the exception of tho latter would be played at Palmerston North. | The director of the Technical School ' (Mr G. G. Hancox, M.A., B.Sc.) reported that, in connection with Anzac Day, an appropriate function was held at which the chairman of the board was the speaker. Mr Spencer, officer in charge of school buildings, had visited the school on May 7. When the school had assembled on May 11, the director had made reference to the passing of the Prime Minister, and the pupils had then been dismissed. The new term would commence on June 1. The principal of tho Girls’ High School (Miss C. B. Mills, M.A., B.Sc.) imported that the school roll was now j 196, with an average attendance for the past four weeks of 186.6. Miss M. Black, 8.A., appointed in the Slace of Miss Daniel!, took up her uties on Tuesday, May 5. Miss ! Stanford, who had, since April 24, been relieving for Miss Dale, has to return to Timaru on Friday next, but Miss Dale would not be able to resume duty for five or six weeks longer, and it would therefore be necessary to procure further assistance. On Monday and Thursday last the school was closed owing to the death and funeral of the late • Prime Minister, GENERAL, Tho following appointments were made in connection with the Technical School: Mr It. AV. Tillick, instructor in building construction; Mr. R. W. Cumberworth, part-time teacher in English and arithmetic; Miss Gladys Hepworth, part-time instructor in shorthand. Accounts amounting to £428 were passed lor payment. Salaries totalled £1503.
