CAR STRIKES BRIDGE.

RAILING PENETRATES RADIATOR A Palmerston North motorist returning from Paekakiriki last evening witnessed the outcome of what must have been a miraculous escajie from serious injury. On the downward journey, a four-seater English car had been encountered which was travelling at a fast rate, and the opinion was expressed by the Palmerston North traveller that disaster would overtake the passer-by if he maintained his speed. This unhappily proved to be correct, for on the return journey, -when Levin had been left behind, it was discovered that the car was standing stationary on a small bridge, and on closer examination it was found that one side was hanging suspended lengthwise over the swollen stream, being kept on an even keel by one of the railings of the bridge which had penetrated right? through the radiator, and past the engine to the neighbourhood of the accelerator. The top railing had been smashed and it w r as feared that the occupants had been ejected into the stream, but search proved unavailing and it was concluded that they had returned to Levin earlier. Fortunately, the lights on the vehicle were still burning and were consequently not a menace to the night users of the road.
