FIRST CANONISATIONS.

An impressive ceremony was performed by the Pope on the occasion of the first Holy Year canonisations, which he will make every Sunday during the next few weeks. The French nun, Sister TliereSe of the Child of Jesus Society, was elevated to Sainthood in the presence Of 60,000 spectators. An electrio loud-speaker operated for the first time inside St. Peter’s and carried the Pontiff’s voice to the most distant cornei-s of the Basilica. The dome facade, and obelisk of St. Peter’s were illuminated by thousands of lamps and flambeaux, for the first time since 1870.—A. and N.Z. cable.
