A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr B. Ling, of Otski, was passed at to-day’s meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association.

Mr J. A. Smith, Well known in local business circles, together with Mrs Smith and Mrs H. R. Rees, of Cook sto set, left to-day for Christchurch on account of the' serious illneee of Mrs Smikti, senr. Messrs M. A. Conway and H. ’S'. Lethbridge, who are shortly leaving on a two months’ trip to Australia, were granted leave of absence for that period by thh( morning’s meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association.

A well-known resident of Dairy Flat for over thirty years, Mr George Green, died on May 15 at the residence of his son, Mr J. E. Green, Williamson Avenue, Grey Lynn, Auckland. Deceased was in his 85th year, and was one of the sturdy band of pioneers who helped to build this Dominion. A motion of sympathy with Mrs W. C. Brophy and family in the passing of Mr Brophy was carried at this morning’s meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, the president, Mr J. H. Perrett, making reference to the happy and optimistic disposition of the deceased gentleman. At a farewell meeting in Christchurch fellow churchmen and friends presented Archbishop Julius with a wallet which conveyed the gift of a large sum of money to bo spent, if lie thought fit, in the purchase of a motor car for use in England, and perhaps subsequently in New Zeuland. In a message of farewell and grateful thanks the Archbishop states that it would be ungracious of him to refuse such application of the gift as the people proposed. Above all ho would value the cur as the gift, of those among whom he had lived and served for so many years.

One of the oldest born of New Zealanders, in the person of Mr John Lucas, senr., passed away at his residence, 54 Alexandra street, at an ear y hour this morning. Born in the Bay of Islands 86 years ago, the late Mr Lucas in his early years was engaged in gold mining on the West Coast, but afterwards served on the New Zealand railways, being one of the first employees to be retired under the superannuation scheme. He was very well known in this town, where he had been resident for the past 47 years, and was an honorary life member of Court Manawatu, A.0.F., which organisation he had been connected with for a very lengthy period. To the widow, three daughters and four sons tho sympathy of a wide circle c.f fr onds will be extended in their bereavement. she daughters are Mesdames C. T. Baines (Makotuku), B. Bowater (Palmerston North) and L. Hart (Margate, England). The sons are Messrs Jack, Feiix and Stanley, of Palmerston North, and Ernest, of Wellington. The funeral will take place U nicrrow.
