BIG PRICE FOR AYRSHIRE COW.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 17. At a dispersal sale of Ayrshire cattlo held at Levin a seven-year-old cow, Maaesjwyn Princess, which was champion at the Royal Show, was sold for the record sum of 505 guineas after very spirited bidding. Mr Weir, of Edendule, Southland, started at 100 guineas, and the bids rose to 300 guineas, when Messrs Bailey (Huntly, Waikato) and 11. R. J. Southey (Walton, Waikato) were left in. Single guinea bids tolok the price to 485 guineas. An appeal to Mr Southey saw him bid 500 guineas, but Mr Bailey offered 505 guineas and scoured the champion at double the price previously paid for an Ayrshire.

SKINS, HIDES AND TALLOW. Tho fortnightly salo of sheep skins, hides and tallow was held at Wellington on Friday, when a good catalogue was offered to the usual attendance of buyers. Sheep skins: Dry skins, in sympathy with the London market .showed a drop and were about 3d per lb easier than last sale. Salteds, however, were in very good demand and showed very little difference than the previous sale, in only a few cases being slightly easier. Hides: These were in good demand but prices were not so good us last sale. Cow hides showed a drop of about id per lb, heavy ox were about Id per lb easier, whilst calf were about on a par with last sale. Tallow: This sold at slightly better pricos. Tho following gives tho rahge of prices realised : Sheep skins: Half-bred 93d to 123 d; fine crossbred Hid to 12d; medium-coarse crossbred 9jd to 12d; short to half wools, 5d to llid; lambs, 10id to 13id dead and damagod; crossbred 6id to lOd; inferior and badly damaged 2d to 6id; pelts, 3d to 73d; damp, salted and green, 5s 3d to 10s 6d; pelts salted, 2s 8d to 3s 9d; lambs, salted, 2s 9d to 6s lid. Hides: Ox, extra heavy, Bid to lOd, heavy Bid to 9gd, medium, 7gd to Bid, light s£d to 63d; cut, slippy and inferior, 6d to Bid; cow, heavy, to 7§d, medium, sjjd to 6gd, light, 4d to 6|d; cut, slippy and inferior, 4d to sg; bull sing. 3§d to 4d; yearlings, 6d to 7gd, heavy, 6d to 63d; calf, medium-good, 7d to 13|d, damaged, 2d to llid. Tallow: In casks, 23s to 343; in tins, etc., 22s to 325. Sundries : Ilorso hair, 15Ad to 16d.

FROZEN MEAT MARKET.

Dalgety and Coy., Ltd., report having received tho following cablegram irom their London liouso under date of 14th inst,: Lamb: New Zealand prime crossbred lamb, Canterbury heavy lo£d, light 12d, North Island heavy 10id, light llid. Demand for New Zealand lamb runs principally on light weights. Market weak, any change in prices is in favour of buyers. Mutton: New Zealand prime crossbred mutton, Canterbury heavy 6d, light 9)d North Island heavy 53d, light 9d. Demand for New Zealand mutton runs principally on light weights. Market weak, any change in prices is in favour of buyers. Beef: New Zealand prime ox beef, hinds 6d, fores 3Ad. Poor demand for New Zealand heel", market weaker. Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated 15th May, 1925 -.—“ Frozen meat quotations (prices 011 a ‘delivered basis,’ i.e., including storage charges, cartage, tolls, etc), are us follow:—Down lambs, 28 to 421 b, 12d per lb; best North Island, 28 to 421 b, 113 d; ordinary North Island, 28 to 421 b, ll|d; second quality lambs, 28 to 421 b, 113 d; best North Island wether sheep, 48 to 641 b, 8d; 64 to 721 b, 6),d; ordinary, 48 to 641 b, 7gd; North Island ewes, 48 to 641 b, s£d; 64 to 721 b, sgd; New Zealand prime ox beef, 160 to 2201 b, 4|d. The market generally is slightly easier. T here is a slow demand all round.”

PRICES OF FAT STOCK FOR EXPORT. Tho New Zealand Meat Producers Board advises that the following prices were being offered 15th May, 1925: Ilawko’s Bay.—Wethers 561 b and under Bid; prime woolly lambs, 421bs and under 12d, 431bs and over llid; second quality lambs 11R1. Wellington.—Wethers, 561 t» and under Bjd; prime woolly lambs 421bs and under 12d, 431bs and over llid; second quality lumbs lljd. Canterbury.—Prime woolly lambs. 361bs and under llid, 37 to 421bs lid; 431bs and over lO^d; second quality lambs lid. SMITHFIELD PRICES. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has received the following cable from its London office dated 15t)i May, 1925, advising Smithtield prices at that date as follow: New Zealand wethers and maidens, Canterbury quality, selected brands. 561 b and under Bid, 57 to 641 b 7id, 65 to 721 b 6J; other brands, 561 b and under BAd, 57 to 641 b 7d 56 to 721 b 6|jd. New Zealand ewes, 641 b and under sad. New Zealand lamb. Canterbury quality, 361 b and under 12ad, 37 to 421 b lljd, 43 to 501 b 10|d, seconds ll|d; selected brands 361 b and under 12gd, 37 to 421 b llid; other brands, first quality, 421 b and under ll|d; seconds 113 d. New Zealand beef, ox fores 3id, hinds sid; cow fores 3d, fores 3|d, hinds 6|d. Argentine frozen beef, ox fores 3id. hinds 5Ad. Frozen pork, 80 to 1201 b, not quoted ; 120 to 1801 b bid. Frozen veal, not quoted.

TALLOW MARKET. Dalgety and Coy., Ltd., report having received tho following cablegram from their London house under dato of the 13th inst.: —Tallow : One thousand and sixty casks of tallow offered, 930 casks sold. Mutton par to 3d higher, good colour mixed and beef 6d higher, inferior fully Is higher. We quote fine mutton 45s 6d, mixed good colour 44s 6d, inferior 40s 6d to 41s per cwt.

DAIRY PRODUCE. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London liouso under date of the 14th instant:—Butter, market quiet. We quote: New Zealand salted 170 s (1725), Danish 178 s (186 s), finest Australian salted 162 s (1625), unsalted 164 s (1645). Total imports of butler into the United Kingdom for April were 654,000 cwt, as compared with 375,000 cwt for the corresponding month last year. Cheese, market quiet. New Zealand white and coloured 94s (95s to 965), Canadian c.i.f. quotation 87s. Last week's quotations are given in parentheses.

STOCK MARKET. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having held their usual fortnightly salo in Tailiape on Wednesday, when a small yarding of sheep and a large yarding of cattle came torward, which sold as below:—M.A. ewes, in lamb to Romney rams, 25s 6d; m.s.b.f.
