A Lbndon cablegram reports tha death of Mrs Baldwin, mother of the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

The Minister of Education lias appointed Mrs Mary Aitchison, of Palmerston North, us a member of the High School.-. Board of Governors, vioo the late Mr S. R. I.ancaster.

The death has taken place at Westport? ol Mrs Catherine Mears, who is stated to liavo been the fourth white woman to arrivo on Donoghue’s goldfield, south of Ross. who had reached the ago of ninety years, was a native of County Glare, Ireland.

OBITUARY.

MRS CAPTAIN FOSTER. Many of the old residents of Palmerston North will regret to learn of the death at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr B. A, Drury, of Pitt street, Raetihi. of Mrs Captain Foster, a well-known Salvationist. The ■ deceased lady, who was T born in Devonshire, England, arrived in New Zealand by the ship Waipawa 44 years ugo and took up residence at Timaru. It was while living there that she and her husband joined the Salvation Army and shortly afterwards engaged in work as officers of the organisation. They were stationed first at Oamaru and later at several other places in the Doinmion before being transferred to Australia whore thoy spent seven years, returning later to New Zealand. For some years Captain and Mrs Foster had been living in retirement at Ruetihi, of which district they wore very highly respected residents. It is some 30 years since tho deceased lady und her husband were stationed in Palmerston North, where they were regarded with affection and esteem. Of recent years Mrs Foster's failing health had given cause for anxiety and early last week it became evident that the end was near. She is survived by her husband, three sons and six daughters, the family including Mr W. J. Foster of tho Palmerston North postal staff, Mrs H. Jackson, of Palmerston North, Mrs A. Koehler, Kelvin Grove, Mrs Deam (Goulbourn, (New •South Wales), Mrs B. A. Drury, of Raetihi, and the late Mrs W. Pirie, who with her young son was burned to death at Raetihi yesterday, reference to the tragedj being made elsewhere in this issue.

R.S.A. DANCE. A successful dance under the auspices of the.R.S.A. was held in the Anza? Club on Saturday night, tho hall being' tastefully decorated for the occasion. Floor and musio were all that could bo desired and patrons enjoyed a pleasant evening. Mr D. Dilks was M.O. LADIES’ GOLF. The British ladies’ open championship meeting commences to-day at Troon, Scotland. The present holder of the title is Miss Joyce YVethered. Miss YY';tLered doe* not intend to take any part in county matches during the coming season, and though she is playing in tho ladies’ championship at Troon, she does not propose to defend the English championship title, which sho has won for five successi ,-o seasons.
