OWN YOUR OWN HOME. The Palmerston North Co-operative Building Society (Starr Bowkett) exists for a two-fold purpose. The first is to enable every person who desires to purchase a house to do so under the easiest conditions possible. The second is to encourage thrift, and to provide a means of saving weekly or monthly sums which are loaned to. each other free of interest, and eventually returned in cash in a lump sum with a snare of the profits. The principles adopted are truly co-operative. The members of each group help each other. Shortly put, the society consists of a number of persons banded together to subscribe to a common fund for mutual benefit. They agree to pay Is per share per week, and as soon as £SOO is subscribed a ballot is taken to decide who shall have the use of the money. Then the subscriptions and repayments of each loan are added together for the next ballot. The money is thus lent over and over again until everyone in the group has had a ballot. . When a member becomes entitlod to a free loan (£IOO for every share held by him) he may either buy land and erect a house, or buy a house already built, or pay off his existing mortgage with the loan. When the security is approved he commences to repay the loan at the rate of 3s 4d per week for each £IOO borrowed. The period of the loan being lli years. On a loan of £SOO so obtained a» member saves not less than £3O a year in interest for that period, a total of £345. If he has ten shares and obtains £IOOO free of interest he saves £690.
