FOXTON NEWS

THE ELECTIONS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) • The biennial elections held on Wednesday evinced a good deal of internet locally. Mr J. Chrystall, who has held tho position as Mayor for a number of years past, and who defeated Mr P. L. Hollings la6t eleciton, did not seek the honour this year, consequently the field was left open for “now blood.” Mr 11. E. Perreau, on receipt of a petition, decided to enter eivio life, as did Mr R, Bryant, a sitting councillor. The voting proved to be two to one, Mr Perreau being elected to the position. The field for tho council was good, thirteen aspirants offering themselves for election, three less than Inst election total. Only four sitting councillors offered themselves for re-election, Crs Adams Parkin, Thompson and Walker, all of whom received the renewed confidence of the Ratepayers. The remaining vacancies were filled by Messrs F. Woods, S. E. Cowloy, R. McMurray, C. Rand and T. W. Winstanley, Messrs E. Murphy, A. P. Easton, E. G. Martin and C. Simmons failing to secure sufficient votes to gain them the coveted positions. The poll was topped by Mr F. Woods and two ex-Couneillors, Messrs McMurray and Rand were included in the successful candidates. There was a large attendance of citizens gathered in front of the Town Hail to await the results of the poll. The mayoralty results were announced at 7.45 p.m. and upon the figures being posted Mr Perreau mounted the steps of tho Town Hall entrance and returned thanks to those who had supported him and called for three cheers for his opponent (Mr R. Bryant) who. he said, had acted the gentleman throughout the election. (Cheers). Cheers were then given for Mr Perreau and Mr Bryant. Mr Bryant, in acknowledging Mr Perreau’s remarks, returned thanks to all those who supported him and also those who had not and who, he said, had saved him a “lot of trouble.” (Laughter and cheers).

LADIES’ HOCKEY MATCH. FOXTON 3 v. LEVIN 2. On Wednesday afternoon the Foxton ladies’ hockey team journeyed <o Levin to play a match against the Excelsior team of Levin. The following represented Foxton : Miss W. Wall (captain), Mrs Ball, Misses E. Patterson, E. Daveys, W. Waller. V. Anderson, B. Ritchie, R. Barber. Mavis Graham, Mrs Akers and Miss O. Procter. From the start Levin attacked and after ton minutes opened the .-coring account. The Foxton forwards get the ball and after a splendid run by W. Wall and E. Patterson, the ball was passed across to Mrs Ball, who made no mistake—one all. Just before half-time the Levin forwards came with a rush and scored again. On resuming play, the captain changed tho position of the backs, placing Mils Rene Barber left half. This proved a good move and tho Levin forwards found it mostly impossible to get past her Faulty work by Levin lost them-two or three opportunities and sound defence on Foxton’s part made ail efforts futile. Splendid combination between W. Wall and E. Patterson at last brought its reward. W. Wall sending one right across the goal and E. Patterson sending in a ball that the Levin goalie could not stop. This was the winning shot and, although Levin tried hard for the last ten minutes, Foxton left the field with a well deserved win in their first match. After the match tho Levin ladies entertained the Foxton team to afternoon tea. MOUTOA NOTES. We are pleased to icarn that Mrs Gregory’s little boy, Leslie, is soon to return from the Palmerston North Hospital. The Mautoa bachelors intend holding a ball at an early date. The mail coming only three times a week is a great inconvenience and it is hoped that there will shortly be a daily service. Steps should bo taken to have a notice put up directing travellers to the use of the punt, as strangers to the district are liable to get into a dangerous position by proceeding on to the bridge, especially at night. This happened recently and it wa3 only, with great preseuse of mind that the car was stopped on the brink of a 30 feet drop.
