KAIKOURA’S EXPERIENCE. CRACK IN THE ROAD. Per Press Association.. CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. A Kaikoura message states that the earthquake last evening shook down chimneys at several residences, while near the Clarence bridge trees have been uprooted and cracks formed in the rqad from two to eight inches wide. Slips caused a blockage of traffic on the Puhi Puhi road. Telephone communication with Christchurch was interrupted at Kekerangu, half-way between Kaikoura and Blenheim. Tremors have been experienced all day, 47 being recorded up till a very late hour to-night, and the residents are camping out in the open. At the Woodbank station the family of the owner are bivouaced in the drive, persistent tremors having forced them to the conclusion that it is a safer spot than in the house. ’ AN UNEASY NIGHT. FORTY-THREE SHOCKS. BLENHEIM, May 2. Round about Kaikoura and in the vicinity of the Clarence river bridge residents had an uneasy night on Thursday during tho Bories of earthquake shocks, which were more severe there than in tho Blenheim district. It is said that 43 shocks were oounted on Thursday night, the worst being at 11.30. Shakes were felt at intervals also throughout yesterday, and there were two shocks last night.
