A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. P V ‘T* 1 GOOD BAGS OBTAINED. Yesterday morning marked ihe opening of the game shooting season for cock pheasants, Californian and Australian quail, swans, grey duck, mallard ducks and spoonbills, and in conversation with Mr T. Andrews, ranger for the Manawatu district, a “Standard” reporter was informed that the official opening had been attended with a good deal of success. The strong westerly wind had liens the game inland and as a direct result. sportsmen who visited the lagoons and river beds throughout the district, had had a royal time, several obtaining , the limit (20 head), empty bags being unknown. During his rounds yesterday,. Mr Andrews encountered one diminutive sportsman, who was tho proud posssssor of four ducks, he being highly elated at the success which had attended his first effort with the gun. M?ny °f the parties, as in earlier years, pro still out and full reports cf their activities will not be available for a few days. Although the season, as applied to grey ducks, spoonbills and swans pas been restricted to two months’ duration, there is every prospect of jt being a particularly good one, added Mr Andrews, for in. addition to ducks, large flocks of quail have been observed in certain parts of the district. The number of pheasants which have bean liberated during the closed period should provide good sport in succeeding seasons. AMONG THE DEER.

In referring to tha deer shooting season, Mr Andrews stated that he had tc date inspected in the Wairarapa, and Manawatu districts some 60 heads whioh had fallen to the rifles of sportsmen, and tho number had included sone particularly fine ones. In the Ohau district, at tho baok of Levin, where some little time ago a nuroter of deer hud been liberated, the aphasia had developed particularly well, and a 23 poipter had been secured in that area. An English sportsman had accounted for a 16 and a 13 pointer, tho former having been forwarded direct to England for mounting. He had also inspected two good heads of 12 and I t points—which had come from the Taihape district. The season for red deer had opened on April 1 and would close on May 30, while the season for sambur would open the following day fwd coptinipj till July 31.
