THE FIRE BOARD.

QUARTERLY MEETING. At the quarterly meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Board there were present: Messrs A. J. Graham (in tho chair), J. Bett and W. L. Fitzhorbert (Palmerston North) and 8. S. Dean, D. J. Bows and W. Parton (Wellington). The chairman extended _ a welcome to Mr Dean, who was resuming his seat on the board after jiis travels as manager of the All Blacks. Mr Dean, in returning thanks gave a short resumo of the trip. The superintendent (Mr W. U. Barnard) reported that during the past quarter the brigade had received 17 calls, made up. as follow: —False alarm, 1; rubbish, 1; chimney, 1; hedges, 2; motor bicycle in street, 1; ’out. of district, 1. The actual fires numbered 10, none of which was of a serious nature. Tho duplex street lire alarm system of one circuit had been installed, and was giving every satisfaction. The new door at the Terraco End Station had been erected under tho supervision of Mr Jackson, lie considered the time had arrived when tho board should take into consideration the question of purchasing a new fire engino with pump complete, his reason being that should the water pressure be low and a fire had to be worked from two positions, two pumps would bo necessary; also should a second alarm occur it might be impossible to remove to the second alarm. The 500 feet 2iin canvas hose ordered through the Internal Affairs Department had arrived, but lie had not so far tested same. The attendance of firemen at fires and drills hod been satisfactory, and the present strength of tho brigade in all ranks was 27. | It was decided to forward congratulations to Mr T. T. Hugo, Government inspector l of lire brigades, on his being elected to | tho Institute of Fire Engineers of Great I Britain, he being the first person in the i Dominion to receive that honour. | Mr Bett was wished a pleasant trip on ’ his coming visit to England, and the hope ; was expressed that the holiday, besides being enjoyable, would bo beneficial to his health. The board expressed its appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Bews, who is retiring from the managership of his company, and that gentleman briefly returned thanks. Accounts amounting to £199 19s Id were passed for payment.
