CHAMPION RINKS CONTEST

AYOODVILLE AND LEVIN TO PLAY

FINAL.

The Manawatu Bowling Centre’s annual champion of champions rinks contest was advanced on Saturday afternoon to the tinul stage, Levin and Woodville being left to play off on a date to be arranged. When the games were commenced in the morning weather conditions were unpromising, but, fortunately, rain held off and tbe eliminating* matches wore decided without hindrance. Nino rinks participated anil the standard of play was well up to axerage. in the latter stages of one of the semifinals, Woodville v. Building, play became exciting owing to the evenness of the contestants, and as the scores wore level on tbe 13th head—all matches were restricted to this number —an extra head hud to be played. There were a fair number of spectators throughout the day. The results of second round games were as follow (the first round was published in Saturday’s “Standard”): —Northern (1\ cavern, Lurcomb, Stuart and flodgins, skip) 17 beat Eketahuna (Maeolm, Meads. C'arruthers and Duff, skip) 15; Levin (Wilson, Stihan, Rankin and Clements, skip) 17 beat Palmerston North (Morris, Howling. r J rott and Jones, skip) 12; Feilcling (Milieu. Ross, lierdmaii and Say well, skip) 19 beat Titkaro '(Morgan, Flint, Smith and Tantrum, skip) 10; Woodville (James, M. Pickering, Dr. Mules and Wardrop, skip) 21 beat Shannon (Morgan, Jones, B. Spencer and E. Spencer, skip) 11. In the semi-finals Woodville beat Feilding on the 19lh head by 18 to 17 and Levin beat Northern by 22 to 8. In the first semi-final Woodville scored two on the first head, anil Fcilding retaliated with singles on the next three heads, but the over-the-range club then established a big lead, the score after the 10th head being 14 to three in their favour. On the lltb Fcilding picked up considerably. scoring six. Singles to Woodville on the next two heads were followed by two, one and four to Fcilding. this bringing the scores level—l 6 all on the 16th head. Woodville obtained a single on the 17th, and, as their opponents scored similarly on the next, an extra head hud to be played, this resulting .in favour of Woodville. In the semi-final between Northern and Levin, the first-named club scored two on the first head and. after a single to their opponents on the next, increased their lead to 3 —2 on the third. From then on the local rink was outplayed. Levin getting five on the fourth and following this up by singles and twos till tbe 10th, where Northern obtained a single, making the score 12—4 in the southerners’ favour. The 14tli and 17th were the only remaining heads on which the home rink scored—three being gained on the former and one on the latter. TARANAKI BEATS AUCKLAND. Per Press Association.
