LORD RAWLINSON’S DEATH.

GENERAL REGRET IN INDIA.

DELHI, March 29. Lord Rawlinson’s death is deplored throughout India. The body will lie in state until the memorial service on 31st inst., when it will be conveyed to Bombay for transport for interment in England.—A. and N.Z. cable.

Lord Rawlinson, the retiring Com-mander-in-chief of India, whose death was announced on Saturday, was born in 1864, and had a long and distinguished military .career. He entered the 60th K.R. Rifles in 1884; was A.D.C. to Lord Roberts in India from 1887-90; served in the Burma campaign, and was with Lord Kitchener in the Sudan in 1898, being D.A.A.G. He was present at tho battles of Khartum and Atbara. He went through the South African War, being mentioped three times in despatches. He commanded the Fourth Corps and the Fourth Army during tho Great War from 1914 to 1918, and was mentioned eight times in despatches. In 1919 lie commanded the forces in North Russia, and in the following year was offerer! the command in India. The late Lord Rawlinson was manned in 1890 but leaves no children. His brother succeeds to the baronetcy.
