THE EXTREME PENALTY.

ETXRAORDINARY INCIDENTS. BERLIN, March 28. There were extraordinary incidents at Essen during the executions of two murderers, Orpic and Caruga. Orpic spent two hours in an elaborate toilet and dressed as for a wedding. When he mounted the scaffold hi the presence of several thousand spectators he obtained pel mission to address them. He said: “I am only twenty-four. Until now, I have never been arrested. I am going to my death and I ask all whom I hi ve wronged for their pardon. God bless you.” Idle trap-door failed to work the first time and the operation had o be repeated. Caruga, a few minutes later, mounted the scaffold and listened calmly to a priest’s ex lortation, which he occasionally inter) upted and courteously expressed a difference of opinion. Then with the noose affixed, smiling and debonair, he waved farewell to a friend in the crowd. Next instant lie was hanged.—j ! l. and N.Z. cable.
