oi'r Frederick Dutton, a yice-pre9idei}t of the Koval Colonial Institute, who is visiting the Dominion, leaves Auckland for Sydney by the Makura to-rnorrow. Professor C. R. Knight, who has been appointed to the chair of agriculture of the Auakland University College, will arrive from the United States on April Ist. Dr. Telford, who recently resigned his position as district health officer, Canterbury. has been permitted to withdraw his resignation, and remains at Christchurch as district health officer. Mr W. T. Morrison, of Christchurch, Conservator of State Forests for the South Island, will attend the annual forestry conference at Rotorua in the middle of next month. Private advice has been received in Wellington that tbe Hon. Downio Stewart has arrived in New York, where he is undergoing special medical treatment, from which he hopes to obtain considerable benefit. Mr John Terry, Registrar of tbe Auckland Supreme Court, "will retire on March 31st. Mr Terry has held his present position sinco June, 1922. Prior to that he was Clerk of the Auckland Magistrate’s Court. Dr. C. M. Hector, of Wellington, who has had considerable experience in bacteriological investigations, lias been appointed to assist Dr. Hercus in connection with research into infantile paralysis and other diseases at Dunedin Laboratory. The death occurred a few days ago of Mr J. T. Laing, of Mt. Eden. Mr Luing, who was born at Thames 53 years ago, was a prominent footballer in bis earlier years, and represented Thames, Taranaki and Auckland in the Rugby game. He was a particularly capable wing-forward. At a largely-attended meeting of the Wellington Headmasters’ Association occasion was taken to bid farewe 1 to Air William Foster, 0.8. E., M.A., who, after ' 46 years spent in the education service of this Dominion, relinquishes, to-morrow, the headmastership of the Clyde Quay School. The death took place at Ohukune recently of Mr James Thomas, brother of Air D. Thomas, of Margaret street, Terraco End. The late’ Mr Thomas, who was born in New Zealand 76 years ago, had resided in ditferent parts of the Dominion before going to Ohakuno five years ago where he was in the bootmaking trade. Ho leaves a grown-up family. Air E. Clarke, of the local stationmaster’s office, was this morning met by bis fellow officers prior to bis departure for Lyttelton, where he has been appointed stationmaster. Mr J. J. O’Shea, stationmaster, on behalf of the staff generally, voiced the esteem in which Air Clarke is held and paid a tribute to his efficiency. Other officers spoke in like vein, end three cheers were given for him. A valedictory social was tendered on Thursday evening to Air J. Carnahan, stationmaster at Otahuhu, who . ias been transferred to the staff at Palmerston North, Dy members of the Otah ihu Borough Council and prominent residents of the district. The Mayor, Air P.. who presided, presented Air Carnahan with a case of pipes and tobacco pouch, on behalf of the citizens, and also with a case of grapes, on behalf of Air F. Lippiatt, ex-chairman of the old Otahuhu Road Board. The high esteem in which Air F. Cl. Page is. held in trade circles was evidenced by a full muster of tbe members of the Wellington Retail Drapers, Clothiers and Boot Retailers’ Association to bid farewell to Air Page, who is shortly leaving Wellington to lake up an important position as London buyer for the Associated New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperative, Ltd., of London. Air Page was in Palmerston North recently for the annual conference of Drapi rs’ and Clothiers’ Federation, of which tic was retiring president. Tho Governor-General (Sir Chines Fer-
