RUSH FOR JOBS.
LORD MAYOR’S DILEMMA.
SYDNEY, Feb. 24.
Close on 1000 labourers have applied personally to tho Lord Mayor for employment in the G'ity Council’s service. Most of these men have been sent along to Alderman Stokes by political supporters, members of Parliament, and business friends, while some are merely chanco acquaintances. Other aldermen have * „ received hundreds of requests fior work. The result is that, instead of engaging men after calling for applicants, tho Lord • Mayor proposes to obtain them from the Labour Exchange so that everybody will get an equal chanco.
In a minute whioh he will put before tho Finance Committee, Alderman Stoke 3 states: —
“I am convinced that in normal times the system at present in pperation is tho most satisfactory that can be devised, but no words of mine aro necessary to stress the acute unemployment problem which exists in the city to-day. “I have no desire to witness, as I did somo little time ago, fully 2000 men presenting themselves for interview when only about a dozen were required; and to pbviate a repetition of this I reoonnnond that the existing regulations with regard to the engaging of the labouring staff be temporarily suspended, and until some other arrangements are made, the town clerk apply to the Labour Exchange for any men required.”
