TO SAVE ST. PAUL'S
COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME. MAY COST TWO MILLIONS... [By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] Received February 7, 8.50 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 6. Mr John Todd, the city corporation surveyor, who served the dangerous structure notice on the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's, outlined to pressmen a scheme to save St. Paul's, which, he said, "will make you gasp." Mr Todd said that £200,000 would be absolutely useless. His scheme would cost £2,000,000 and take 12 years to cany out. He would hold the dome in its present position with temporary supports and take down and rebuild the present rotten pillars, which owing to Sir Christopher Wren's inferior filling carried three times the weight that solid Portland stone should. Mr Todd said he would make a great round base of concrete 6i feet thick under the cathedral. It was no boy's job, but another labour of Hercules.—Reuter. MUCH DISCUSSED QUESTION. LONDON. Feb. 6. The newspapers are seriously concerned over St. Paul's. Several advocate that th« Government appoint a committee of experts to satisfy the public in view of the conflicting opinions as to the safety of the structure. It is argued that the responsibility is too great to be left to the Dean and Chapter.—A. and N.Z. cable.
