RACING NEWS.

NOTES. (By Flaneur.") J. Adams is spelling both Paniin and Maidos. Megalo looks none the -worse for her racing at Trentham, and moves attractively in her exercises. Lin Arlington, formerly in charge of Luke "Wilson, is now trained by Con Biel at Awapuni. The total amount paid in taxes to the Government by the Forbury Park Trotting Club in connection with its recent meeting came to £SIBO Is 6d. Askari and Red Head, in It. Hatch's stable, have been schooled over hurdles on several occasions lately, the latter giving the best display.

Mountain Signal and the hurdler Rowan are being hacked about. Pantier, in the same stable, is having a spell, which will be of short duration.

At a sale of bloodstock at Randwick recently Belltower, a four-year-old gelding by Finland from Belfry, was sold for 40gns, and Fianna, a six-year-old mare, by Kilbroney, realised 220gns.

Mr F. Armstrong, of Akitio, is leaving the Dominion oh March 16 for an extended trip to the Old Country, and for a time is going out of the racing business.

Mr W. Russell was appointed judge for the Egmont Racing Club's meeting in place of Mr C. H. Washer, who has resigned. Mr Russell is also the judge for the Taranaki and Wanganui Clubs.

Mr W. G. Stead evidently contemplates another trip to Sydney in the autumn, for Father's Voice appears among the entrants for the Doncaster Handicap at the Australian Jockey Club's meeting.

After the Ohawe Hurdles contest on the firsit day at Egmont the stewards held an enquiry into the running of Passin' Through, which they considered unsatisfactory, but no action was taken.

Master Sarto, a four-year-old gelding by Sarto, and Pinna were recently given a run over hurdles, both animals shaping well. They are trained by A. Browne and A. J. Shearsby respectively.

It is possible that the Palmerston North-trained Herbilwyn, considered by some to be the most promising ct the young trotters seen out this season, will be sent to Auckland for the Otahuhu meeting.

The well-known Sydney, jockey, TV. H. McLachlan, who rode with some success in England- last year, is at present on a short visit to Australia. It is McLachlan's intention to return to England at an early date, and he will, it is understood, ride for Lord Dundas this year. <

Oration, winner of the Maiden Hack scamper a* the Egmont meeting, is a two-year-old colt by- Ciceroi—Elsie Hart, and was purchased at the Auckland sales a few weeks back by Mr Newton King, of New Plymouth, for 950gns. Oration was ridden by H. Gray. •

Mr H P. Blundell possesses in Starshell (Battle Eve—Silver Beacon) a useful sprinter. He went out favourite in the Waipapa Hack at the Egmont meeting, and quickly running to the front never looked like being beaten, eventually passing the post with five lengths advantage from General Pryde.

It has not yet been definitely decided ; f Gold Light is to go to Sydney for the autumn racing. When spoken to recently S. Waddell said that the trip would most likely be undertaken. The Hymettus mare must be feeling the effects of a hard season, however, and for that reason the trip may not be a certainty.

Steel Bar, a' winner at the recent Takapuna meeting, is racing very consistently, as he was successful in both his starts at Trentham. The Austra-lian-bred gelding has thus scored three wins in succession, and he is-lTkely to earn a good deal more distinction, as he comes from a breed that improves iwith age. 9

The Whareroa Welter at the Egmont meeting ended in a thrilling finish. When the field had settled down Mangawhero led from Imperial Spark, Esthonia and The Banker, with Cold Steel last, a position he occupied all the way. On the home turn Esthonia joined issue with Mangawhero, but the latter was quickly disposed of, leaving Esthonia in charge at the distance. Here Imperial Spark and The Banker threw out challenges, and on the post the thrco were almost in line, the judge's verdict being half a head victory for Imperial Spark, the other pair dead-heating. Imperial Spark, who races in the colours of Mr 0. P. ISash, was artistically handled by R. Reed.

An epidemic of colds, has been sweeping through the Invercargill stables during the past four weeks. Haligan, who is now owned by Mr W. Bayly, of Palmerston North, won a double for her new owner at Pahiatua. It is understood that she will go to the stud next season. Haligan was not a gret success on the turf, but being by Hallowmas from the Boniform mare Bonny Helen (dam of Uncle Alex) she may be worth her place in the matrons' paddock. Stork, who won the Egmont Cup, is owned by Mr Newton King. At one stage it looked as if Landslide would win all the way, and it was only the generous finish by Stork that saw the Aucklandcr caught on the post. The time is a record for the race. The sectional times taken by "Early Bird" were as follows: First half-mile 52 2-5 sees, six furlongs 1.18 4-5 sees, mile 1.44, last half-mile 49 2-5 sees, and the full distance 2.33 2-5 sees, the official time being returned as 2.335.

Wench, who notched four hurdle events at the West Coast holiday meetings, and later won place money at Trentham in flat races, had a very handy impost in the Ohawe Hurdles at the Egmont meeting, her poundage being 9.11. She was prominent throughout the journey and won with a trifle in hand from Gold Peak. Equitable, who was badly placed in the early stages, finished in attractive style, and was only beaten by a head for second honours. On the second day Wench was given 10.11 in the Okaiawa Hurdles, but that weight failed to stop her, the speedy Puwhero being second.

The first half of the present racing season has been disposed of.
