TENNIS NOTES.

(By “Cross Court.”)

That local tennis- enthusiasts are keen on witnessing good play was evidenced by the large number who attended at the Linton street courts to witness the meeting of teams from the Palmerston North and 'Hawke's Bay Clubs. Ilawko’s Bay contains \Somo very good exponents, of whom Campbell, an old Palmerston North High School boy, is the best, but they went down on Saturday in a decided manner to the local players. Andrews’s easy defeat of the head of the Hawke’s Bay string augurs well for the chances of the former in this year’s big events. Miss L. llodder, playing up to her usual high standard, easily accounted for Miss Craig, who played lirst for Hawke’s Bay. An interesting game wus that in which Andrews and Miss llodder defeated Campbell and Miss Lowry. 4 —6, 4 —6. In partnership the two Hawke’s Bay cracks did better than in their singles, but here again could not withstand Manawatu’a champions. The honours wore eusily with the borne team, but in a return match llawke s Bay may confidently be expected to put up a better showing. The two new asphalt courts of the watu Club are now in commission and are being eagerly availed of by members. It is anticipated that they will give a stimulus to winter tennis, for which charges for meiribcrs and members of other clubs have been fixed. Mr 11. N. Watson, a tennis veteran and ever keen and generous supporter of the game, has again proved his generosity by further valuable donations through the Palmerston North Club, with which he is most intimately connected. As is well known there is already a geld cup for competition under the aegis of the club and which was given a while ago by Mr Watson. It is a men’s singles trophy. Mr •Watson has now given a silver cup tor the ladies’ championship singles. which will be contested this season. The same donor has made a handsome presentation to the Wellington Association in connection with this year’s provincial championships, to he held at Palmerston North. After negotiations between the Palmerf»ton North Club and the Wellington As* socialion it has been decided to divide this latter donation into two parts for award in two new events at the provincial championships. They will be known us the Men’s Wellington Provincial Plate, and Ladies’ Wellington Provincial Plate. respectively, and the conditions will be that they are open only to players who have been beaten in the first- and second rounds of the championship singles at the tournament., Post: entries will be received after the rounds named have been played. It. is expected that these new events will promote a deal of added interest, especially on the part of players of only aver age ability, and are calculated to attract more outside entries than would otherwise he the case. Every care is being given the lawns, and fourteen good grass courts will he available for the championship fixture next month. The secretary of the club states that there are indications that the entries will be very largo. An A Hulls ladies’ team is expected to meet a team from the Palmerston North Chib to-morrow. The match will be ten a-side.

Mr A. W. Rims, of Christchurch, lawn tennis champion of New Zealand, lias been transferred to Wellington, and he will probably represent Wellington in the Now Zealand championships and this season’s Wilding Shield matches.
