MURDER PENALTY.
DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. IMPRISONMENT FOR LIFE. Received December 10. 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 9. Tlie death sentence imposed on Medi Doran for tlie 'murder of John Jacob lias been commuted to imprisonment for life.—Press Association. When the steamer Troworias was en route from Ocean Island to Sydney a fireman named John Jacob, a West African, was stabbed to death on the forecastle deck by a member of the Indian crew named .Medi Doran. The two had been working together as greaser and fireman since the beginning of the voyage, and, owing to Doran’s had temper, there had been frequent quarrels. Jacob was leaning over the deck rails when Doran attacked him with a knife, and before lie had time to grapple with his assailant, he was stabbed. The attack was so sudden that the other members of the crew were unable to interfere.
