CHICAGO’S BAD RECORD.
CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE.
JOURNALISTIC METHODS BLAjfED. Received July 24. 12.10 a.m. NEW YORK, July 23.. Commenting on Crime Commission statistics, the Chicago tribune says: “Criminal justice in America has become a Romnii holiday and the court:; are the coliseum. British law is infinitely superior for conducting trials.” It adds: “The injury to justice is in the publicity before the trial. Tho newspapers trials before the case i.l called have become an abomination. Journalistic lynch law is the rule. The prosecuting attorneys' now hasten to the newspapers with their theories and confessions, and the defence attorneys do tho same* Neither dartf do otherwise. Half wifcted juries or prejudiced juries are inevitable.’’ The Tribune admits that it shares the blame, and insists that no newspaper can escape it. “There is,” it says “one remedy drastic restriction of publicity before the trial must he imposed by law.”—A. and N.Z. cable.
