Cockayne, J’.U.S., hon. l>otanist, State Forest Service, has received word by the last mail that lie has been elected a corresponding member of tho Finnish Forestry Society of Helsingfors, Finland. Tho personal popularity enjoyed by the Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) was voiced by Mr W. J. Poison, Dominion president of tho New Zealund Farmers’ Union, at the opening of the annual conference of that body in Wellington. "I do not know how many people there are in the Dominion over the age of five years,” said Mr Poison, addressing His Excellency, “but I do know that you have endeared yourself to all, and can truthfully say that you in New Zealand a million personal friends.” The Go-vernor-General was elected a life mcml>er of tho union.

The Rev. W. Tye, curate of St. John’s Anglican Church, Feilding, who has boon appointed to tho cure of the Wanganui parochial district, was last evening farewelled by St. John’s parishioners. Eulogistic speeches were mado by various speakers on behalf of the different departments of church work, and, on behalf of the parishioners, the Rev. F. H. Petrie presented Mr Tye, with a cheque. In doing so he referred to the excellent, services which had been rendered by the recipient in all branches of the church’s activities. Mr Tye briefly returned thanks for the gift and good wishes. Musical items were rendered during tho evening, und a dainty supper was served by the ladies.

The untimely death of Mrs J. Goodwin, of Kaiinatarau, on Sunday evening at the Palmerston North Hospital, caused widespread regret throughout the district (writes our Rongotea correspondent). Tho deceased lady, who ha- lived for tho greater part of her life in the Rongotoa district, was highly respected, and her death at the age of 51 years, after a short illness, came as a great shock. The funeral, which took place at the Rongotea cemetery, was attended by an exceptionally large number, giving evidence of the esteem in which she was held. The ceremony at tho gravesido was most impressive and many were the beautiful floral tributes placed on the grave, including one from the Kaimatarau Football Club in which tho dccoased was greatly interested. The deepest sympathy is felt for the husband, daughter and two sons who are left to mourn their loss.
