DOMINION PRODUCE.
POPULARITY IN ENGLAND. POTENTIAL MARKET FOR NEW ZEALAND EGGS. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, July 22. “I noticed a wonderful and growing popularity in England in favour of New Zealand produce,” said Mr J. B. Merrett, who arrived by the Corinthio from England.
Mr Merrett went to England to supervise the trial shipments of New Zealand eggs, and to establish, if possible, a regular market in London for this product. “There is no limit,” he said, “to our possibilities in regard to eggs on the London market. I noticed a tremendous change in favour of New Zealand produce. “Yet I vas astonished at the absolute ignorance o£ so many people in regard to the affinity of England and the Dominions. People who became informed of the extent and resources of the Dominions expressed both astonishment and gratification. They only need education regarding our products to willingly accept all the stuff we can send them.
“The quantity of deterioration in our eggs in cool storage on the way home was negligible. Several largo buyers asked me to give them preference in future shipments. One buyer, a restaurant-keeper, used all he could get, 2000, in a couple of hours. No loss than £13,000,000 worth of eggs is imported into England every year from 42 countries. We could get almost the whole market in quality, if we could supply the goods.” Over 1.000,000 eggs went Home in trial shipments, and Mr Merrett says the chief factor in the success of the experiment was the grading, which more than compensated for the slight deterioration in _ quality suffered on the long voyage. This deterioration was confined only to slight evaporation. In some instances New Zealanu eggs brought from one penny to twopence a dozen more than English eggs a week old.
