Per Press Association
CHRISTCHURCH, Julv 23. “There is only one way to stop shoplifting and that is imprisonment,” said Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.AL, in giving a woman seven days for various thefts of ladies’
wear. It was slated by the police that accused, a single woman, belonging to a respectable country family, had no need to steal. Counsel said that the woman had had drink during the day and the thefts were clumsy. The woman wished to go lo an inebriates’ home, but feared contact with criminals. leniency wa-s asked for in consideration of her agreeing to take out a prohibition order. Tho Alngistrate said that tho woman was not qualified for I’akatoa. The fact that she was of respectable family constituted no ground for probation which should be granted rather to those who were dragged up and knew no better.
