SIR WALTER BUCHANAN’S FUNERAL.

CARTERTON, July 22 Although the weather was bitterly cold and stormy, the largest number of people that has ever gathered in this 1 district assembled tp accoid t u. last honour to a deceased fel o - settler at ClaraviUe ceniotm t™" to-day, when the interment of the late Sir Walter Buchanan, K. 8., A1.d.0., took place. The plain cortege started froti tlie late residence of tho deceased, L downe, Masterton, and was joined alt along the road by units from outlying places, while very many more from the neighbourhood of Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough and Lower Valley, with which portion of the district Sir Walter had been more closely associated during the greater portion of his life, met and joined the procession at Clareville corner. A special train from Wellington brought the Prime Minister and other members of Cabinet and members of both Houses; of Parliament and prominent Wellington citmeps. Immediately following the hearse were the Right Hon. W. F. Massey, Hon. A. D. McLeod, M.P. for Wairarnpa, and*members of tlie Cabinet, the Mayors of all the Wairarapa boroughs and chairmen of all the local bodies, together with their Councils. In the presence of this great concourse of people, the remains of the late feir Walter Buchanan, who had so strenuously, usefully and gallantly foughttha battle of life, were laid to rest. The Presbyterian Church funeral service was impressively carried through by the Rev. G. King, of Lanadowne Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. J. Davie, of Knox Church, Masterton.
