GOLF.

PROFESSIONALS AT PLAY

TOURNAMENT AT SYDNEY

INTERESTING FINAL MATCH

The final round in the Sydney Sun £SOO professional golf tournament was played at the Rose Bay links, Sydney, on July ID between the two brothers, Walter and Carnegie Clark, resulting in a will for the latter who was one up at the 37 th hole. The match aroused wide interest, which was intensified by the brilliant display of Walter Clark on the previous day when he heat D. G. Soutar UN.S.XV.)

The match was full of interest throughout. For tho first twelve holes Walter Clark exhibited a marked superiority over iiis brother’s play. Only once up to the 12th did he show any indecision and that was on the 11th when he hesitated debating which club to take for his second shot. Carnegie Clark made several blunders at the first few holes and on tho 13th his brother was then four up, and on the 18th 2 up. Their figures were: — Walter Clark. —Out: 4,4, 3,4, 4,3, 5,4, 4—35; home, 3,4, 4, G, 3,5, 6, 3, 5—39 ; total 74. Carnegie Clark.—Out: 5,4, 4. 4,4, 3,6, 4,4 —3 S; home, 4,4, 4,5, 3,5, 5,3, 5—38; total 7G. Bogey is—Out: 4. 5,3, 5,5 t 3,5, 4, s—-39; home, 4. 5,5, 5,3, 5,5, 4, 5—41 ; total BU.

Play continued fairly evenly, botli pressing each other alternately. At the 31st Walter was one up and on the 32nd the scores wore even. At the 34th Walter’s doom seemed to be sealed. Botli were in bunkers guarding the green with their thirds. Walter was well short of the pin in getting out, and Carnegie ran over the hole. Walter just missed his long putt, and Carnegie, holing his, was 1 up for the first time iii the match.

On the 35th both players were square again and on the 36th there was no alteration, the scores reading: Carnegie 7G, Walter 78. On the extra 37th and last hole both got good drives away, and were about 20 feet from the pin with their seconds. Walter putted first, and overran the hole for nine inches.

Carnegie putted, and stopped on tho lip, laying a stymie. Walter tried to jump it with a nibblick, but knocked Carnegie’s ball in, and the match was over.

The complete prize list for tho tourney was as follows:—Best four: Carnegie Clark (N.S.W.), with £5 gold medal, £195; Walter Clark fN.S.W.), £100; D. G. Soutar (N.S.W.). £4O; F. Popplewoll (N.S.W.). £4O. Second four: T. E. Howard (N.S.W.). £25; W. L. Spicer (Vic.), £ls: R. Keating (Vic.). £l2 10s: Rowley Banks (Vic.). £l2 10s. An amusing illustration of tiro lure of golf was given at Wairoa a few days ago. When members of the Gisborne team were motoring across the Wairoa bridge on their way to Napier the question arose as to whether a golfor could drive a ball across the width of the river. One player declaring his belief that ho could succeed, he was promptly challenged to make the attempt. The good people of Wairoa were amazed to see a party of golfers rush from tho centro of tire town to the hank of the river, where one player essayed the feat of driving a ball across. The wide river won, however, and after threo balls had been sacrificed tho player admitted that the width of the river was greater than ho estimated. Tho challenger also made an attempt, but soon concluded that it was a waste of golf balls, the river winning every timo.
