SUGAR REFINERY.
POSSIBILITY OF CLOSING. AN AUCKLAND PROTEST. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 22. The possibility of tho closing of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company’s works at: C helsea is viewed with a good deal of concern by the Auckland Industrial Association, which held a special meeting to consider the matter.
A motion was passed unanimously that tlie attention of Parliament be drawn to the serious position that would arise should tlie company find itself unable to continue the refining of sugar in New Zealand through tho removal of the present Customs duty on refined sugar. The probable future intennitteney of supplies now regularly available, continued the motion. would greatly embarrass New Zealand manufacturers , using sugar, and • would probably increase tlie cost of their products to the public.
Attention was also drawn to the fact that some 370 workmen would be deprived of employment by the closing of works, and tlie Government was urged to appoint a special Parliamentary committee to enquire into the position and report forthwith. Mr Hills was appointed to represent the association before any commission or coinmittec the Government might set up.
