OROUA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Oroua County Council met yesterday, there being present: Crs. A. Campboil (chairman), O. McElroy, T. Green, W. McLennan, W. Greenhow, W. H. Brewster and J. H. Vincent. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Department of Internal Affairs advising that the council would have to pass a special order in connection with the alteration of riding boundaries. —It was left to the clerk to call a special meeting of the council, on July 9, and it was decided that the chairman and Cr. McElroy wait on the Feilding Borough Council in the matter of control and maintenance of bridges, etc., on Port, street. Prom the Kiwitea County Council stating that, in connection with Sir Jarne3 Wilson's application for a road, Mr A. E. Pearce had been appointed to confer with the council's representatives. —Received. From the Department of Agriculture detailing the precautions taken to prevent the introduction of foot and mouth disease into Now Zealand. The department was watching the measures taken in other countries and had prohibited the import of stock and stock foods, grain, etc., from any infected areas, except with a sworn statement that such had been disinfected and were free from, disease. The disease was not rampant in Australia, the letter stated, and the department was fully alive to the clanger of its introduction.—Received. From A. M. Frew complaining of stock wandering on the roads at Hiwinui. —The ranger was instructed to prosecute offendENGINEER'S REPORT. The enginoer (Mr R. L. Harding) reported inter alia as follows:—Taonui rid-

ing: The re-metalling of Taonui road from Colyton to the foot of Pearcc's hill has been completed, about 1024 yards of crushed metal being doliverod on this road. Gravel repairs have been effected on laonui road south, Reid's line, Nannestad s and Bunnythorpe-Ashhurst roads.' When the crusher commences operations again 1 propose metalling Taonui road from Reid's line to Colyton. Hiwinui riding: Gravel repairs have been effected onßun-nythorpe-Ashhurst and Palmorston NorthAshhurst roads and maintenance gravel has been carted to the dumps on Palmerston North road. Siberia and Ulysses roads are also to receive immediate attention. I would suggest that application be made to the Main Highways Board for authority to widen the Palmerston North-Ash-hurst road. Otangaki riding: Palmerston North and Gorge roads have been repaired and Pohangina road has also been attended to as far as Ulysses road. Ulysses road and the upper portion of Pohangina road will be next to receive ' attention. GENERAL.

Permission was granted Mr G. Wheeler to erect a motor slied on the road line.

It was decided that the engineer inspect a gravel pit on Mr Wischnowski's property with a view to drawing supplies therefrom. It was resolved that an endeavour be made to arrive at a reciprocal arrangement with the Kairanga County Council in the matter of the latter's ranger operating on Siberia road. An application by Mr S. M. McGreab for permission to fence an unused road at Halcombe was referred to tho enginoer and the councillor for the riding. Permission was granted Mr E. Pttsk to fence a portion of Penelope road. In respect to telephone lines on Watershed road, permission was granted to lay cables under the road where a telephone line came in contact with a Public Works or power board line, and to move telephone poles to the opposite side of tho road where necessary through the same cause.

The chairman said he thought that work in connection with the stone crushes.could be better supervised by a competent man being placed in charge continuously. No starting whistle was blown, and that was one matter which showed the need for closer supervision where a large body of men was engaged. Tho meeting agreed that something should be done in the matter and it was decided that the machinery committee met that afternoon to discuss, inter alia, tho best method of supervising the county machinery operations and maintenance.

The following alterations were made on the county rolls: —Neill Small, junr., to Henrietta ' Scott"; Jas. Malone to Patrick Malcne; W. H. Brewster to E. P. C. Swainson; Ann Burcham to K. G. Richards; J. R. Temperley to Helen Bielski; John Orr to William Searle; H. Stratford to F. 0. Johansson; Oroua County Council to A. McHardy.

The treasurer reported as follows: Amount of goneral rates collected during current year, £567 15s 2d; arrears, £3B Is 2d. Riding accounts. —Mangaone, cr., £193 5s lOd; Rangitawa, dr., £952 3s 3d; Railmanga, dr., £IOB 3s 6d; Makino, dr., £BB 6s 4d; Taonui, dr., £553 6s lid; Hiwinui, dr., £222 8s 3d; Otangaki, dr., £5 5s lOd. Bank balances.—Countv fund account, dr., £1741 5s 2d; Gorge road loan, cr., £3215s Cr. Greenhow alluded to the action of Manawatu-Oroua Power Board in allegedly placing its poles too near the road line on the Palmerston North-Ashhurst road, but no action was taken in the matter. Accounts totalling £949 13s 9d were passed for payment, the clerk commenting that the county expenditure to date in the financial year was £360 less than fpr the same period last year.
