AN UNSATISFACTORY POSITION. CENTRAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S VIEWS. Reference to the large number of relieving teachers passing through the schools, after being on the staff for only very sfiort tenns, was made by Mr L. F. da Berry, headmaster of Central School, at the meeting of the committee last iugia. He stated that one relieving teacher uad only remained for a week, and he held that this sort of thing was inimical to titt efficient instruction oi the children.

The chairman (Mr A. J. Mahon), referring to the fact that one of the relieving teachers had not passed her examinations, said: "That is not much good to Cental. It might bo all right for the backbloeka if thev could not get anybody else/ In leply to a question, tho heaumastep said that anyone could apply to the Ldu. cation Board to be placed on the list ot relieving teachers, no matter what their qualifications. There was much sickness about at present, and consequently the* Education Board had to resort, to the relieving teachers available. Of course, ho added, these were graded but it was a mast, awkward and- difficult position. Another point, he added, was that the relieving teachers were nearly all just waitillS to secure a permanent position, and once they got one they lelt the school where thev happened to be iminejJutelj, the committee briefly discussed t H e position, the chairman remaking that »» seemed as if no good could be done by passing a resolution. The board was up against it," he said, and it was to t.a hoped that the position regarding die. teaching staff at Central School would ha relieved next month.
