TO-DAY'S SITTING. BY-LAW BRExVCHES. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over today's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Albert Edward Bull, charged with haying caused a dray to stand in a public place at night without a light, was fined 10s and costs. On a charge of driving a horse and cart at night without a light John Cook was fined 10s and costs. For riding a bicycle at night without a light Bert . Ilaybittlc was fined 10s and costs. Failure to observe the rule of the road in the borough while driving a motor car cost Herbert King £1 and costs. M. Honore, J. L. McArley and J. A. Jensen, for riding bicycles at night without lights. were convicted on the information of tlie borough traffic inspector (Mr Lowery) and each fined 10s and costs. APPLICATIONS FOR PROHIBITION ORDERS. Samuel Reid, for whom Mr McGregor appeared, was charged that on May 26, 1924, he was drunk while in charge of a horse on the Ashhurst-Pohangina road. He pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs. Application was made by the police for a prohibition order to be issued against Reid, who opposed it. Constable Fisher, of Ashhurst, stated that, since the last prohibition order had expired, defendant had been drinking considerably. This was denied by defendant in evidence. The Magistrate adjourned the application for two months to see how defendant behaved in the meantime. MISCELLANEOUS. James Edgar, on the information of the school attendance officer (Mr C. J. D. Skinner), was charged with having failed to send his child to school regularly. Mr Skinner said the case was a very bad one. A fine of 5s and costs was imposed. On a similar charge Annie Bear was fined a like amount.

For boarding a train at Shannon whilst it was in motion, Mervyn Drummond was fined £1 and costs.

On a charge of being £IOO 10s in arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, Arthur Symonds was sentenced to six months' hard labour, the warrant to bo suspended so long as he complied with the order and paid 10s weekly off the arrears.

Bridget Mary Crawford was granted a separation order against her husband, William Crawford, and the guardianship of their child. Maintenance was fixed at 30s weekly for the wife and 10s weekly for the child.

James Donaldson, charged with being £l6 in arrears on a maintenance order made in favour of his wife, Violet Chrystal Donaldson, was sentenced to two months' hard labour, the warrant to be suspended go long as the order is complied with and 5s weekly paid off the arrears.
