SPORTING.

(By “Flaneur.”) The English-bred colt by Skyrocket from Ladas Maid, for which M. E. Riddiford paid lOOOgns., will race as Sky Blue. Mr E. E. D. Clarke, the breeder of Gloaming, is to race a two-year-old sister to the champion, who will run in public as Lightsome.

It is said that the hurdler Carawock is being got ready for a steeplechase campaign on the Auckland country circuit.

Mr W. R. Kemball has disposed of the Kilboy filly Kilris to her trainer, B. Burgess, and she raced in her new owner’s colours at Trentham.

According to reports, R. Reed intends appealing to the Racing Conference against the three months’ suspension inflicted on him by the Manawatu Racing Club.

Since his return from England, Hector Gray has ridden five winners; two at Trentham and three at Foxton. He was to be in the saddle again at the Takapuna meeting to-day.

The locally-trained Sir Pam ran his best race to date when he won the Trial Plate at Trentham. Ho was one of the leaders from the start, and finished on strongly.

Gaillard, which won the Nursery at the Trentham meeting, is one of the Absurd tribe, his dam tracing to Steppe, which founded a great family famous alike in New Zealand and Australia.

H. Gray rode Scion in the 'Wellington Cup and Racing Club Handicap. It was noticeable that in each race he had the Boniform gelding in a good position early, but he could not improve it at the finish.

Hector Gray has decided to remain in New Zealand instead of returning to England. Gray has been rushed with engagements since his recent return, and has already ridden seven winners, including Ruapapa, which won the chief event at Takapuna yesterday.

Included in the business transacted by the licensing committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference, held in Wellington on Wednesday last, was the granting of a trainer’s licence to D. Hands and jockey’s licences to H. McSweeney and It. Hunt.

That brilliant filly ( Motley has had a remarkable innings so far this season. On her first appearance she contested the Wellesley Stakes, but more than met her match in Killocra, who was favoured by racing experience. Since then she bus an unbeaten record in her four starts.

The Invercargill sportsman, Mr W. Stone, made a lucky purchase when lie acquired Bugle Note prior to the Wellington meeting. On Tuesday the Solferino gelding paid a nice second uividend in the Ruapehu Handicap, and on Thursday showed the way home to a useful field in the Camp Handicap.

The colt that realised top price at the Waikanae yearling sales on Friday is a brother to Rachael, who raced in Mr J. J. Corry’s interests at the Wellington meeting. Though the colt was knocked down to the Blenheim sportsman, Mr W. A. Fuller, it is quite proable (says “Templar”) that Mr Corry has an interest in him.

Entre Nous, a four-year-old filly, is a half-sister to Silver Link, being by Bonifonn—Secret Link. She was bred at the Waikanae Stud, and cost her owner, Mr J. J: Corry, of Blenheim, 3SO guineas as a yearling. She ran third to Merit and Bugle Note in the Apprentices’ Plate at Wellington on Tuesday, a head behind the latter.

The acceptances received for the Woodville District Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on Friday and Saturday, are all round very satisfactory, and everything points to the fixture being a successful one. The first race starts at 11.30 a.m. Special trains will leave Palmerston North station on both days for Woodville at 9 a.m. and Ashliurst 9.29.

Mr C. Beasley, who for quite a number of years held the position of sporting writer in connection with Truth, has severed his connection with that journal, and at a meeting of press representatives in the press room at Trentham lie, in an appropriate speech, thanked all those who were present for their loyalty to him while occupying the position of chairman of the press gallery. He proposed that Mr V. O’Brien should occupy the position that he was vacating and this was generally agreed to.

The Christchurch Sun is responsible for the following:—“lt is stated that offers ranging*from 1200gns. to 1500 gns. have been refused for Herbilwyn, which won the Kirkwood Handicap' at Wanganui. Herbilywyn is a five-year-old chestnut square-gaited horse uy Nelsop Bingen out of Miss Spear, and if, as is stated, these tempting offers were turned down, he must be rated very highly by his connections.” Herbilwyn is owned and trained by Mr W. A. Price, of Palmerston North.

After his easy win in the two-year-old handicap on the first day of the Wellington meeting, there were many inquiries for a price to be put on Nigger Minstrel. F. Davis was not empowered to put a price on him, and his patron, Mr Eliot Davis, has already offered 2000 guineas, while Mr Charles Elgar was prepared to considerably improve on this offer. Most people agree that the full-brother to Desert Gold will make an ideal Derby colt.

The Palmerston North owned Santonio, which beat Glentruin in the Metropolitan Handicap at Wellington on Thursday, is a five-year-old gelding by San Fran—Dolly Fisher. He only started once as a three-year-old, when he ran unplaced at the Feilding meeting. Last season he faced the barrier on twenty-one occasions, winning six events, including two minor ones at Wellington. This was his first win this season, but he has been placed on several occasions. He was in receipt of 3st. 41b. from Glentruin, but as the race was run in 1.10 2-5 he demon strated that he has more than ordinary pace. His supporters drew upwards of a score as the result i? - his victory. TAKAPUNA CLUB’S MEETING. RUAPAPA WINS BIG RACE. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 29.
