TOWN BOARD MEETING.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A special meeting in conjunction with the ordinary monthly meeting of the Town Board was held in the board’s room on Monday evening. Members present were: Messrs L. 11. Yarrall (chairman), B. Guymer, \V. J. Croucher and S. Teaz. After reading and confirming the minutes of the previous meeting, the ordinary business of the evening was transacted. It was agreed that the registration fee for dogs should be the same as last year. Mr Yarrall was appointed works committee for the incoming month. Accounts amounting to £37 Os 4d were passed for payment. Later, the special business of the evening was discussed, when the question' of fixing the weekly half-holiday was brought up. There were present, on behalf of the local traders, Messrs J. Eggcrs. H. llowell and E. Robins. Mr Eggers spoke in respect to altering the present Wednesday half-holiday to Saturday, lie was strongly supported in his view by Mr llowell, who spoko at some length on the subject on behalf of other business premises desiring the change. The proposed change would allow farmers who attended the stock sales on Wednesday afternoons to purchase goods. At present, owing to the shops being closed on Wednesdays, they were unable to do so. The change over would be very advantageous regarding sport generally, allowing shop assistants to indulge in the pastimes which were invariably held on Saturday afternoons.’ Mr Robins, who was decidedly against the proposed change, quoted instances of the failure of Saturday afternoon in ■ other towns. Mr Yarrall, although in sympathy with the movement, pointed out to the deputation that the majority of the ratepayers must be in favour before such a change could take place. The vote was accordingly taken, resulting in the present mid-week holiday being adhered to.

The local Tennis Club members journeyed to Palmerston North on Saturday afternoon and engaged in a friendly match ■with a club team there, the game resulting in a win for the home team by 16 sets to eight, after a very enjoyable afternoon’s play. The first dance of the season to be held locally is being arranged in aid of the Feeding Sports’ Queen, in connection with the Feilding Jubilee. The function will take the form of a social and dance.
