FREE TRADE BRITAIN.
SUFFERS FROM COMPETITION. QUEBEC, Dec, 26. Mr Massey, while speaking at the Cana, dian Club, argued in favour of a protection policy within the Empire. Ho said ;t was the aim of the majority of those at the Imperial Conference to bring into operation the principle of protection. If is true we cannot go into it hurriedly, but there is no doubt the measure will be of great benefit to the Empire as a whole when it can be put into operation satisfactorily.” Unemployment and trade depression in England could be ascribed to the fact that 50 years ago Britain was the workshop of the world, and her products were pm chased by the majority of foreign nations, vbilo to-day with Britain as a free trade country, foreign manufacturers were producing cheaply themselves and shipping the surplus to Britain to the detriment of the British manufacturer.—A, and N.Z. cable.
